Jobless claims rise for second straight week
Source: AP

WASHINGTON — The number of newly laid off people signing up for unemployment benefits rose sharply for the second straight week, suggesting that jobs are still hard to come by even as the economic recovery gains traction.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that first-time requests for jobless benefits rose by 24,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 484,000, the highest level since late February. Economists had predicted claims would fall.

It marked the second week that claims took an unexpected leap. In the prior week, claims rose by 18,000 to 460,000.

A government analyst, however, cautioned against reading too much into both weeks' figures, saying they were clouded by seasonal adjustment difficulties related to the Easter holiday, which falls on different weeks each year.

Even with the increases over the last two weeks, the trend in claims have been slowly drifting downward. Fewer people overall have been seeking unemployment insurance as the job market recovers.

For instance, for the same week a year ago, first-time claims totaled 609,000, compared with the current 484,000. Applications for jobless claims peaked during the recession at 651,000 in late March 2009.

1. Government contradiction should simply not be tolerated
I mean, so what is it? Were there REALLY 2.2 million jobs created in the last quarter? If so, why hasn't the number of jobless decreased, and why are jobless benefits requests down instead of up?

May we PLEASE get some truth from our f'ing government for once?

jobs that were saved. I could be wrong though.

4. You simply have to manage your masses!
That's in the playbook.

Who is going to interrupt the mad, passionate love-making going on between government and special interests? I mean, it is an orgy, what with the military, corporations and the financial Elite screwing away all hot and sweaty in that serious action going on.

It is sheer pornography and all we livestock get to do is sit and watch the lewd and kinky, steamy tornado of capitalistic love, while we dig change out of the couch to buy some house-brand, microwave popcorn as we begin to realize that most of this is not about our benefit at all. Our utility is all that has any remaining value.

6. Whoa! Reporting FIRST TIME jobless, not jobless.
That is people who just now lost their jobs and just now signed up for unemployment.

Other people, jobless for a while, found work and the number of jobs created overall went up.

Add that we as a nation add new persons every 11 seconds, there are more people looking for jobs each day.

Add that Easter came unusually early and that temporary sales persons came and left earlier than usual making seasonal adjusting more of guess than surmising.

And, of course, the total numbers are better than last year, so we are headed in the right direction. It's a tough road to make jobs, but easy to lose them as Bush did. Aside from the national debt and associated upcoming liabilities, our money system is and remains saddled with hidden Bush-era debt that can throw a wrench into the system at any moment. So, don't get too comfortable yet.

and those of us that pointed out the corrections will show differently, as they have consistantly done so ..are always met with silence by the propagandists..when the real numbers are brought out.

heck we all know how bad it is..all we have to do is look around our own communities..

I was just at a outdoor mall ..I was there 2 weeks ago and there were 4 stores closed..I was just there yesterday and 12 are now closed.

A store I have frequented for 18 years, I just saw yesterday..it is closed and out of business.

I have never in my 58 years seen it like this where I live..neverrrrrrrrrr.........

11. You're seeing now what my Michigan saw the last several years.
Nationwide we are now gaining net jobs. We all were just losing fewer jobs each month than the month before for the last several months of Obama. And we were losing more jobs month after month under Bush and until we got the reigns.

Those were still negative, still losses of jobs, still more people not working each month, but it was at least the right direction (decreasing job losses monthly) as opposed to Bush's wrong direction (increasing job losses monthly).

Going from monthly net job losses to net job gains only means we just PASSED THE BOTTOM of the job loss curve. And, the effects of losing all those jobs are still slowly killing businesses.

You will continue to see worse things happening.

People and businesses holding onto a thread, are still going to have those threads break on them. They won't be able to hold on long enough.

The census jobs are nice, they came around at a nice time, but they were only a couple drops in a bucket of holes.

We almost have those holes all patched and are trying to pour water in faster also. I wish I knew what more we could do.

34. Well, since 2010 minus 55 does not get us to the Era of the Great Depression, of course you haven't.
For some, it is their second time around--only this time, we are already at war, so we can't expect war to save us.

And Obama is no FDR. Nor is Timmeh the equivalent of the people FDR had advising him, including Joseph P. Kennedy.

16. The excuse we get...
...is that as the economy improves, more people decide to start looking for a job again. They show up again in the jobless claims when before they weren't looking for a job.

35.  AFAIK, you are not entitled to collect unemployment UNLESS you are actively looking for work.
Edited on Fri Apr-16-10 10:19 AM by No Elephants
See, for example http://www.edd.ca.gov/unemployment/eligibility.htm

Unemployment is a safety net for people who want to work, but cannot find a job. It is not taxpayers giving you severance pay or early retirement money.

So, in theory, EVERYONE on unemployment is looking for a job. So are many whose right to unemployment benefits, state or federal, ran out in February and who are not helped by the recent extensions. They don't show up on anyone's radar.

BTW, didn't you post something similar at least once before and once get basically the same answer from me fairly recently?

BTW, who do you claim is giving this reason?

Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 08:09 PM by flyarm
that 162,000 jobs were had..what they didn't tell you is over 80,000 of those jobs were temp jobs with no stability and no security and no benefits and 45,000 of them were census jobs..

and when many of us said they keep revising the numbers we were called names or mocked.

Let me add ..now many of the census workers have been laid off ..some without working a day..and many that only worked one day..look it up in Wash Post.

we are getting a daily dose of bullshit dished out ..no different than what we experienced for 8 years by the previous occupant of the people's house!

oh and add this to the pile of shit too!

Per MSNBC:

"Tamron Hall, anchorette, says to reporter Jay Barbree, "In just about 45 minutes Obama will speak to NASA workers to explain why he's deciding to end plans for America's return to the moon, at least for now. The administration feels there's a time to reassess and reset the situation. It is not his quest to end our attempts to go to the moon, correct?"

BARBREE: He's messing up the sandbox if you will. But you said there in the introduction that he's coming here to speak to the workers. And what I've just been told, he's going to speak before about 200 select people in the building where they will build the Orion and not a single worker, I'm told, has been invited.

HALL: Wow.

BARBREE: I wonder if the President knows that. Maybe he'll be told that when he gets over to the building and maybe we'll find him pulling in some workers because, after all, that was the purpose of his trip, as you said."

Oh and this was discussed on our local news in Fla as well tonight with interviews of NASA scientists ..who are very pissed by the way!! One in fact said he would become a garbage man, but they are all getting laid off as well!

21. Enough with the doom and glooming. The big picture is one of improvement, so just relax and stay
positive. The economy is expanding, and the outlook for the year is 3 to 3+% growth. It is the right trend. There are all kinds of little factors that play into week to week stats. Look at the big picture, and remember, this was the WORST recession since the Great Depression. It is going to take several years to replace all 8 million jobs, but we are starting to head in the right direction.
We don't need all this foolish dooming and glooming with so much good news out there. We just smacked down the R's on unemployment compensation AGAIN. We are going to get the banking bill done. We are going to get a climate bill done. We are going to get more economic legislation done.
We are going to get another decent new SCOTUS Justice. Come August a hell of a lot of troops are coming home from Iraq. Brighter days are ahead of us. We just pounded the RePUKES in South Florida. Chin up!
