(Haley) Barbour, advisers privately mull 2012 run
Source: Politico

When asked about his presidential ambitions, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour told reporters earlier this year that “If you see me losing 40 pounds that means I’m either running or have cancer."

It might be time to start watching Barbour’s waistline.

POLITICO has learned that Barbour is weighing the prospect of a 2012 White House bid and convened a private meeting April 8 with a group of some of his oldest and closest advisers, some of whom flew in from the East Coast to Jackson, Miss. The gathering stretched for six hours, during which time the topic of a presidential run was discussed.

One adviser familiar with the state capital sit-down said that Barbour concluded that he did not need to make a decision now and that the group should meet again after this fall’s election.

You'd think the Republican leadership would want to avoid a candidate who, while perhaps attractive to the Primary voters, plays into every Southern "Good Ol Boy" stereotype that people have.

11. Despite all his shortcomings, he can probably raise some money...
which is good! It will suck a lot of money away from someone who might actually be able to win.

Yikes, how much is racism going to be a part of that election? Ron Paul, Haley Barbour? That's going to be scary watching them constantly try to push the boundary of what they can get away with saying.

That primary is going to be like "I'm a bigger racist than he is!"!

14. Pigs Fly
This reminds me of some Indy Repub leaders back in the 90's who dressed up with pig snouts to make some sort of point. However, they made a different, unintended point and were objects of scorn and laughter for weeks.

Barbour is different in that he does not need the pig snout mask. He is already there au naturale.

We know where this is heading. If the economy turns around and the military leaves Iraq, Barbour is going to suffer a Goldwater like loss.

He jumped on Va. Governor Bob McDonnell's Confederate History Month bandwagon when everyone else (including McDonnell) was jumping off.

26. Haley definitely isn't working for me. I'm betting he won't work for
a lot of young voters in his own party either.

I don't see young voters of any political stripe choosing someone like Haley Barbour over someone like Barack Obama.

Even Barbour has enough self awareness to know that he isn't going to make it - even in Iowa.
