White Supremacist Rally Ends with Five Arrests Two Assaults(LA CA)
Edited on Sat Apr-17-10 07:57 PM by RamboLiberal
Source: LA Times

A white supremacist rally on the lawn of Los Angeles City Hall ended with a handful of arrests Saturday afternoon as counter-protesters showered police and white supremacists with rocks, bottles and other debris.

Update, 4:50 p.m.: All five people arrested were counter-protesters, police say.

A rally by 40 members of a group calling itself the National Socialist Movement drew hundreds of counter-protesters from throughout the region. In the hours leading up to the rally, where members called for the removal of all nonwhites from America's southwest, counter-protesters scuffled with people perceived to be sympathizing with the white supremacists' message.

One man, who sported Nazi tattoos, was severely beaten near City Hall while another man, who carried a confusing sign about religion with a scribbled swastika, was pummeled by a mob of people on Spring Street between 1st and 2nd.

The Los Angeles Police Department went on tactical alert during the event and took responsibility for escorting the white supremacists to and from the demonstration site. Earlier in the week the group had obtained a permit for the demonstration.

At the end of the rally, after 2:30 p.m., police escorted the white supremacists to the criminal courts building parking lot to get in their vehicles. However, one car failed to start. A crowd of counter-demonstrators ran to the lot and began hurling rocks and bottles into the parking lot's southwest corner, hitting cars and shattering glass. As some of the white supremacists held shields emblazoned with swastikas over their heads to protect them from the projectiles, others attempted to jump-start the car.

7. LAPD has no interest in arresting neo-nazis. I find that pretty self-explanatory.
These guys worshipped Darryl Gates, who just died.

The younger ones are not so bad, but there are still a lot of firebreathing racist RWers on the force.

all accounts are, they arrested the people that committed the criminal acts, to wit - assault

do you have any EVIDENCE otherwise, or just prejudice?

48. What evidence do you have that none of the violence was committed by the
white supremacist demonstrators and those who agreed with them?

Bsides, what "all" reports are you talking about? Did the LA times reporter--or any reporter observe every incident first hand and interview each of the violent persons?

The media gets more RW all the time. I've posted here about blatant bias in various LA Times stories a number of times.

Sorry, not buying that people who oppose white supremacists are more violent than white supremacists. That defies a lifetime of my own experience. Odds are that did not change on a dime in LA this week.

so, you don't have any evidence

nobody said people who oppose white supremacists are more violent than white supremacists

the media and cop account was in THIS instance there were a few counter protesters who committed crimes against and were arrested

nobody is making a meta statement about relative proclivities towards violence

again, evidence FAIL

logic FAIL

84. There is no "logic fail" here...
"the media and cop account was in THIS instance there were a few counter protesters who committed crimes against and were arrested"

It is well-known that the media will regurgitate whatever the authorities tell them. They're little more than stenographers and cannot be relied upon to report the truth. Likewise, cops cannot be relied upon to tell the truth, which has been documented ad nauseam. I wouldn't believe a police officer unless I, personally, knew him/her to be scrupulously honest, or unless there was explicit video and audio documenting the entire affair from start to finish. The general reputation of the police profession is in the toilet - and deservedly so. So... absent irrefutable evidence to the contrary, it is perfectly logical to presume that these arrests were tainted in some fashion unless provided with solid evidence to the contrary.

Furthermore, there is a presumption of innocence here. That's how our system works; the burden of proof is on the police, NOT on the accused. Therefore, for purposes of this discussion, the burden is on YOU (as one who seems inclined to believe the police) to provide evidence that those arrested are guilty - not the other way around.

107. You are missing the point...
The point is, there is no evidence required to doubt the veracity of the police. The burden of proof is on the police, not the accused, and unless I see incontrovertible evidence that law enforcement's version is accurate, I have every reason to doubt their account. Our system is built upon that principle.

That said, there is the separate issue of the dismal reputation of the law enforcement profession in general. Considering the steady stream of revolting police misconduct, it really isn't "prejudice" to doubt the veracity of a cop. It's common sense. This profession is held in such low regard, it's almost as if they're trying to compete with the Vatican in a race to the bottom. And like the Vatican, law enforcement is a profession that presumes to exert control over the rest of us, while simultaneously shielding, covering up for, and enabling criminals in their own profession, thereby spreading stench over the entire organization. As citizens we really have no way of knowing if the cops in this story are corrupt or not. So no... doubting the veracity of cops isn't prejudice. It's completely logical, all things considered.

111. A prejudice in favor of cops does not produce a greater truth than an
alleged prejudice against cops--which seems to be your fantasy--that anyone who does not support cops 100% of the time as you do must be out of reality. Fact is, anyone who supports them 100% of the time--or stays off a thread when he can't--is the one with an obvious bias.

And, yes, there are reasons to doubt the account. The reasons stated in my original post.

First, the media is not terrible reliable these days, for a whole host of reasons, ranging from laziness and ineptitude on the part of some, to being unbelievably time pressured and rushed, to downright bias. Anyone who believes the media sees all and knows all AND always tells the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth is truly in la la land (pun intended).

Second, nothing in a lifetime of my experience tells me--or ANYone in his or her right mind--that neo-Nazis and/or white supremacists are non-violent folk, or more non-violent that those who oppose them.

Third, nothing in a lifetime of experience tells me that everyone is aware of his or biases.

Fourth, nothing in a lifetime of experience tells me that cops are quick to admit any mistake, or even the possiblity of any mistake.

110. No dodge. No logic fail. Simply pointing indisputable reality.
You're the one who has no evidence that the little bit of story you do have represents the truth, the WHOLE truth and nothing but the truth. What is the cop going to say? The wrong people were arrested? Fat chance.

Making assumptions like that is the logic fail, especially when the result is very different from a lifetime of experience.

Also, you claim that the arrests were made for assaults. That is beyond assumption on your part. That is not even consistent with what the article does say.

Sorry, your zeal to defend the police 100% of the time does not make the OP article bulletproof or equal superior logic. Or superior anything, when you get down to it.

is it your contention that only liberals protest nazis?

really?

that there is a media/LAPD conspiracy to arrest only people who PROTEST nazis, and to fabricatre assault charges against them, because gosh darnit, LAPD loves them some nazis. especially all the hispanic and black cops in the LAPD

and of course, while you have no evidence to support your wild-ass theories, after all this is a rant and you don't need logic or evidence. you've got your prejudices to keep you warm at night

tell that to the residents of skokie, that only liberals protest nazis. they protested the nazis in force and last i checked, skokie illinois is not a hotbed of liberalism

the VAST majority of people in this country, liberal, conservative, libertarian, anarchist, heck WHATEVER hate nazis

so, when you can address the ACTUAL issues, and stop dodging and weaving, let me know, spanx.

112. As far as the 1977 Skokie case, your facts are way off.
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 05:46 AM by No Elephants
First, in 1977, when the Nazis wanted to march in Skokie, the Democratic Party was, on the whole, a lot liberal than it is now. Second, in 1977, Jews were almost exclusively Democratic, and often among the most liberal of Democrats And, whatever their political persuasion, only 30 years out of WWII, many Jews in America were Holocaust survivors and/or had one of more family members die because of Hitler. With that...

"The National Socialist Party of America (a Neo-Nazi group) planned a march in the town of Skokie, Illinois, a largely Jewish community. Many Skokie residents were Holocaust survivors.

Second, there was no protest "in force," by residents of Skokie as you claim. The town's government thought the march would be too disruptive, given its population and banned it. Yes, when interviewed by a reporter or something like that, some residents expressed (verbally) their opposition to the march. But there was no demonstration or "protest" to keep the Nazis from marching in Skokie, not a "protest" as there was in L.A. last week to keep the Nazis out of town.

Ultimately, the Nazis chose to march in Chicago, which had been their original choice, after all. The residents of Skokie--and of Chicago--simply stayed away in droves. No counter demonstration accompanied the march.

Later, the residents of Skokie set up a holocaust museum on Main Street, the same street where the Nazis had originally sought to march, but never actually did march.

So, sorry, Skokie does not prove your point about conservatives mounting counter-demonstrations against neo-Nazis and/or other white supremacists, "in force" or not.

Relatively recently, an alliance has grown between Jews and evangelicals, having to do with eschatology, rather than with equal rights for a religious minority, per se. Apart from eschatology, conservatives in this country have never been among the majority when it comes to championing equal rights for all humans, not in 1607, or in 1767 or in 1867 or in 1947 or in 1957 or in 1977 or in 2002 or in 2010.

I experienced first hand racism and violence from LAPD. You'd have to be stupid or willfully ignorant to say LAPD and Industry (in particular) weren't racist violent sick fucks (for the most part). For a long while, if you were not prone to use sadistic violence, LAPD would not even hire you. And, certainly, if you are a man or woman of color, regardless of age...and you haven't been held at gunpoint by LAPD...you just haven't been out of the house.

You are not alone in jumping to conclusions about who was beating up on whom. It seems that in the melee it was "our" counter-protestors who did the beatings, and if they were the ones who got arrested they deserved it.

114. It is not jumping to conclusions to entertain the possiblity that those were not
the only two instances of "arrestible" behavior at the event. Two instances of Nazis being beaten does not mean the first attack in those two cases came from a protestor. Brawls are rarely that neat. And those two instances do not mean that no Nazi present attacked another protestor, say a block away. IOW, the universe of relevant events at that march is not necessarily that two Nazis were identified as victims.

It's easy to slip into. It takes real effort not to demonize others and it's no fun. But we have a responsibility as human beings to at least try to put ourselves in others' shoes. If we don't, we can't meaningfully distinguish ourselves from the rest of the animal kingdom.

GI's in WWII considered themselves to be fighting for the right of Nazis to be marching in LA in 2010, but that is my opinion--based on speaking with people who did fight in WWII.

For all you know, Grandpa would have been among those arrested.

I've reread this subthread 3 times and I still am not clear on what you guys are asking/implying. I'm not commenting negatively about the cops for arresting the protestors if that's what you are trying to insinuate. I'm not making any assumptions about 'what really happened' or anything.

Yes, the Nazis have protected free speech, the government allowed them to exercise that right. The counter-protesters got arrested for their actions because they don't have the legal right to assault people like that. Is there something unclear in my first post that is causing confusion? I'm not criticizing the situation. The Nazis have the right to speak. They spoke. The counter-protesters threw stuff, breaking the law. They got arrested. I have no problem with any of that.

All these people saying the protestors look like jerks or whatever, well personally I'd rather be a rowdy jerk who believes in human rights than a polite Nazi. That's all.

117. I responded only to your comment about free speech. The right to free speech consists
only of a right against government.

No matter what the counter demonstrators did, tried to do or wanted to do, the Nazis got their right to free speech because Constitutional rights of American citizens are against government and only government, not your fellow citizen. (I am speaking loosely here, not implying anything, one way or another, about whether non-citizens also have rights against the govt, which is an entirely different topic).

If no one even alleges that government did something to impinge on the Nazis right to free speech in LA, this story brings up no free speech issue. Mentioning free speech on this thread implies the event described in the OP did raise a free speech issue of some kind. It doesn't.

That was my only point in responding to your comment about free speech.

I don't know that I agree with all of the rest of your later Reply (87), but I think my other posts on this thread cover my other views. To you, I was responding only on "free speech."

It's nice to see LAPD defending free speech, even of wannabe Nazis, and it's nice to see outraged citizens letting the wannabe Nazis know what they think of their racist ideas. If LAPD makes a similar practice of defending the free speech rights of anybody to the left of Newt Gingrich I will start to think better of them than I have in the past.

Me, I'm a First Amendment absolutist who doesn't like violence and doesn't think that it is necessary in any demonstration no matter howvfile the speakers.

If the protestors were smart, they would've stayed home and let the Nazis talk among themselves. Instead, the protestors lost control and made themselves look bad and the Nazis look good, if the reports are anywhere near correct. Dumb.

I once saw the Chicago cops handle an Illinois Nazi rally from an upper floor of an office building in Chicago.

No one was hurt despite an angry and surging crowd of a couple thousand and about 30 Nazis.

The cops let the Nazis speak for about 15 minutes. I found out that the Chicago cops had told the Nazis that they could no longer guarantee the Nazis's safety, and the Nazis picked up and left very quickly and efficiently. I think that they had been through the drill before.

The LA cops should send some folks to Chicago to learn how to do this right.

19. NPR story: A white supremacist group rallied against illegal immigration in downtown Los Angeles
Saturday as hundreds of counter-protesters gathered to shout them down in a tense standoff that included several arrests, thrown rocks and police in riot gear.

Police officers stood between the white supremacists and counter-demonstrators on the south lawn of Los Angeles' City Hall, where about 50 members of the National Socialist Movement waved American flags and swastika banners for about an hour.

Members of the Detroit-based group said they picked the location for their rally because of Los Angeles' large immigrant population. They accused some of the immigrants of stealing jobs and committing crimes.

Group members also said they were reacting to the recent number of street marches across the country encouraging legislators to enact reform that includes amnesty for some illegal immigrants. National Socialist Movement regional director Jeffrey Russell Hall announced that the group would begin backing political candidates who agreed with their anti-immigrant message.

Emma Lazarus was a New York Jew of Portuguese descent. I've met a number of Jews from other parts of the country who were quite biased against New York Jews. And, Portuguese to boot. So, it's nice she felt that way, but I don't know that was a majority view in the 1880s.

Her poem made me cry when I was a kid and also well with pride at being in a country like the one she suggested. Then I realized how much contempt some people had for immigrants and for Lazarus's sentiments, for her view of America.

Talk about a loss of innocence.

What is interesting here is the LAPD and news media want to portray them as victims. One can even argue that they are victims, but lets face it, they were not looking to have a nice peaceful rally to express their views, they went out of their way to be provocative, to get attention, so they got what they wanted.

43. LAPD doesn't "want to portray" them as anything
LAPD should arrest the ones that were committing the crimes

apparently, in THIS instance, it was a (small, in fact TINY percentage of the counter protestors)

it is not the job of the cops (or the govt) to arrest people or not arrest people based on whether they agree with their ideology

it is their job to enforce laws, for example, against assault.

one of the hard things about being a cop is that you have to be impartial in cases like this, and defend the rights of people you ABHOR and sometimes arrest people you may agree with, in principle.

at the N30 protests, i was decked out in full riot gear and some assmunch walked up to my partner and started screaming at him, calling him a "fucking ni**er" etc.

did we arrest him?

no. that would have been a violation of his civil rights.

did we WANT to kick his ass?

yes.

but there's this pesky thing called rule of law. while some officers may violate that on occasion, they are wrong when they do so

Imagine if these had been anti-war protesters and they were treated in such a way (I'm sure there have been incidences that it's happened) how angry would you be right now. Granted Nazi assholes are lower than chickenshit, but they still have the right (gag) to protest.

The way to make them look bad is to be the opposite of what they are. Once we lower ourselves to this type of behavior, we're no better than they are.

Edited on Sat Apr-17-10 10:04 PM by Cleita
First, if you are going to protest immigration policy, why are you protesting at City Hall, which has nothing to do with it? Protests against the policies of the Federal Government are usually held at the Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd. in Westwood. It's also where the more affluent and white people live, so maybe there would be less hostility from counter protestors. Instead, the supremacists seemed to want to start some kind of a riot in holding a protest in a part of the city where the only white people around after sun down are in squad cars. Most of downtown LA is home to a large Hispanic population. So why did they pick this particular spot to do this if they weren't trying to start something? They asked for it and they got what was coming to them.

In this case I do not really doubt that the counter-protestors were so angry as to be incited to violence. I don't like or condone it but it isn't surprising. We have lived through eight years of misery under the shrub and now we are having to deal with the aftermath AND we're being blamed for it. I am freaking furious - I don't think I've ever been so angry at anything or anybody as I am at the rethugs and teabaggers and sometimes it boils over. What is surprising about that?

64. White supremacists' rally sparks violent clashes in Los Angeles
Source: Dailymail UK

* CHECK OUT THESE PHOTOS

A white supremacist group rallied against illegal immigration in Los Angeles city centre yesterday as hundreds of counter-protesters gathered in a tense standoff that resulted several arrests, thrown rocks and police in riot gear.

Police officers stood between the white supremacists and counter-demonstrators on the south lawn of Los Angeles' City Hall, where about 50 members of the National Socialist Movement waved American flags and swastika banners for about an hour. Five people, all of them counter-protesters, were arrested at the demonstration.

The white supremacists, many of them wearing flack helmets and black military fatigue uniforms, shouted 'Sieg Heil' before each of their speakers took the podium to taunt counter-protesters with racial, anti-Semitic and misogynistic epithets.

'We will meet you head on,' one of the white supremacists warned the crowd from behind several phalanxes of police in riot gear. Members of the Detroit-based group said they picked the location for their rally because of Los Angeles' large immigrant population. They accused some of the immigrants of stealing jobs and committing crimes.

only in the south..errr...ummm. This is really fucking with my self righteous indignation toward other states.

But seriously, all those people want is for you to get upset with them. The violence is feeding directly into their hands.

77. Yep! Right next to Texas I think
The South does deserve more respect, but one must admit, in rural areas it can be scary to those who aren't white.

82. I'll certainly admit that ignorance is pervasive everywhere.
But if you want me to admit those stupid stereotypes are anything more than just another form of racism, sorry.

Rural areas are scary to those who are from an urban upbringing in the same way urban areas are scary to those raised in the country. Urbanites think there's a man being drug behind every truck on dirt roads and farmers wives think every city with more than 2,000 people is Boyz n the Hood.

That ignorance flows both ways quite heavily and giving it any credence whatsoever does nothing to help anybody.

88. Perhaps - but wasn't it Aristotle who said
He who is unable to live in society, or who has no need because he is sufficient for himself, must be either a beast or a god: he is no part of a state.

100. Little known fact: Society stretches beyond pavement.
Hey, if you want to perpetuate the ignorant stereotypes, go ahead. Don't pretend you're too many rungs above the shit heads you want to think you are above though.

66. Yep, I was thrilled having them come to town.
I live a short 15 minute drive from downtown LA. I was hoping I wouldn't see any of them in my town. They sure would stand out in my liberal, hippie neck of the woods.

is not free when it is tainted by hate. Why would the city give those haters a permit to rile the people of that city where there is a large group of mexican americans, african americans and asian americans, that akin to yelling the n word in a group of blacks.

129. nice evasion
neither are hate speech

and yes, it is ok to yell fire in a crowded theatre

it is not ok to falsely yell fire in a crowded theatre

that is the argument that was used to justify the prosecution of a WAR PROTESTOR btw

it was superseded by the brandenburg standard

The spirit of the law does not protect hate speech.

121. how do we know the violence wasn't started by provocateurs?
as at anti-free trade/WTO/globalization demonstrations?

keeping the people divided and hating each other pays big dividends to the PTB.

otoh, the poor widdle Nazi scumfuckers made a point of strutting their ugly ignorant tattooed skinhead selves around in a heavily immigrant, nonwhite area of LA instead of demonstrating in front of the Federal Building, which is more the source of the laws they are protesting. So they weren't "protesting" anything, they came out to provoke. what did they expect? try being a white person "demonstrating" in Harlem by calling people n-words. it is your "right."

let me just say that if I saw one of these cretins on fire I wouldn't bother to piss on him to try to put it out.

Or did they truly believe we'd all run like roaches in a light beam?

I hope there's a armed counterprotest to their DC march, too. Let's see how brave they are when they're literally in the face of those who can shoot back.

I know several people of this mindset, and they would LOVE the chance to do this.
