Taliban guns down outspoken Afghan tribal chief
Source: OneIndia

Kandahar, Apr 29 (ANI): Taliban militia have gunned down Afghan tribal chief Abdul Rahman in Kandahar.

Rahman had attended a tribal shura a few days prior to his death. The gathering of 1,500 chieftains and tribesmen had President Karzai in attendance.

Rahman raised several pertinent questions with regard to the security situation and the threats posed by both the government and Taliban.

At the shura in Kandahar, the elders made it clear they thought the Karzai Government was as much a problem as the militants, who have grown in strength in the region in recent years reports the BBC.

1. Can the Taliban do anything that doesn't involve execution, murder, or assassination?
That seems to be their answer for everything, just shoot at it.

7. I can't see any proof that this was the Taliban.
The district governor says "He was killed by the enemies of Afghanistan."

The news reports take this to mean the Taliban.

The reports also say he was killed by unknown assailants.

The Taliban takes responsibility for its killings elsewhere; why not here?

On Wednesday, the Taliban said its forces were ready to face a planned NATO push, a day after suicide bombers stormed a private security firm's base in Kandahar killing at least four security personnel.

In a statement posted on its website, the Taliban took responsibility for the attack on the main compound of "Supreme," a logistics and private security company that transports supplies for NATO troops in southern Afghanistan, which it said killed 15 security personnel and injured 60.

I notice in the BBC report that he named corrupt official in the meeting with Pres Karzai.
On a rare visit to the area, the birthplace of the Taliban, the president was sharply criticised on issues of security, corruption, bribery and nepotism.....

...Mr Rahman accused certain officials of destabilising Kandahar and named a number of them at the meeting. He said their activities were making the province insecure.
