Three Passengers Pulled Off Dubai-Bound Flight
Source: Wall Street Journal

DUBAI—Dubai-based Emirates Airline said Tuesday that flight EK202 bound for Dubai was called back before taking off from New York and that three passengers were removed from the aircraft as part of an investigation into a failed bomb attempt in Times Square.

"Full security procedures were activated including the deplaning of all passengers and a thorough screening of the aircraft, passengers, and baggage," an Emirates spokesperson told Zawya Dow Jones. "Emirates is cooperating with the local authorities."

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said earlier Tuesday that a suspect in the attempted Times Square bomb attempt in New York was arrested trying to board a plane for Dubai. U.S. officials identified the man as Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Pakistan. Mr. Shahzad was detained at 11:45 p.m. Monday night at John F. Kennedy Airport as he was preparing to fly.

The Emirates flight was delayed by around seven hours and is expected to take off at 2 p.m. Dubai time, the Emirates spokesperson said.

5. Yes. I love how Republicans keep saying Bush kept "us" safe from terrorists.

I guess "us" means people within the U.S., but not a 911 victim or a Ground Zero victim or anyone who misses a 911 victim or a a Ground Zero victim.

Talk about your clueless and your self absorbed. (Isn't something like that on the Statue of Liberty?)

3. Other stories refer to Shahzad as a U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent. That implies NOT being born
in Pakistan himself. Which is it?

Journalists seem to get worse by the hour.

9.  Nope.
Someone born in Pakistan of Pakistani parents is referred tosimply as "a Pakistani," or "a native of Pakistan" or "born in Pakistan." You would not refer to that person as someone of "Pakistani descent." At least not if you want to use the term correctly.

The fact that he later may have become an American citizen does not magically transform a Pakistani to someone "of Pakistani descent." If he were born in America of Pakistani parents, he would be an American of Pakistani descent. The same is not true if he is born in Pakistan of Pakistani parents.

(Spread the word.)

10. I don't see why not
If you're born in Pakistan, you're of Pakistani decent. It's doesn't imply anything either way, it's just less clear.

11. Nope back at ya.
The nation of a person's "descent" is determined by the nation of birth of their parents, not their own place of birth or citizenship.

For example, Sean and Mary Sullivan are born in Ireland. They have a child Seamus while living in Dublin. They later move to the US and become citizens as does Seamus. They then have a second child,
Joe. Joe and Seamus are both American citizens of "Irish descent" as are their parents (assuming that Sean and Mary's parents also were born in Ireland). However, if Sean and Mary Sullivan had both been born in Brazil to parents who also were born Brazil (to pick a country at random) then Joe and Mary would be of Brazilian descent, notwithstanding the fact that they were born in Ireland and the US respectively.

Referring to the suspect as a "native born Pakistani" doesn't tell you his "descent" because he could have been born in Pakistan to parents born somewhere other than Pakistan. To use my example (Brazil), he could be an American citizen who is a native born Pakistani of Brazilian descent.
