FDA finds bacterial contamination in children's medicine ingredients
Source: LA Times

Reporting from Washington
Raw materials used to make over-the-counter infant's and children's medications, which are subject to a massive recall, tested positive for bacterial contamination, according to a Food and Drug Administration inspection report released late Tuesday.

McNeil announced a recall of more than 50 variations of infant's and children's Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl on Friday.

FDA officials said they were not aware of any reports of illness connected to use of the recalled products, and they described the chances of harm as remote in a press teleconference call late Tuesday.

But Commissioner Margaret Hamburg nonetheless repeated terse advice for parents: "Please discontinue using any of the name-brand products being recalled."

1. thanks for posting this
had been treating my son with Benadryl for his allergies, probably not related but he's been home sick 2 days from school with a tummy virus.

2. My mom told us about this yesterday
the original report was that it was an underdose/overdose problem (which sounds like PR) but now it is bacterial.

When my wife went to the drugstore yesterday the shelves were empty.

4. Overdose of bacteria
The FDA report says this inspection was triggered by another inspection, so my bet is that this will trigger more inspections of J&J.

3. You know this kinda freaks me out because ...
my daughter got her tonsils out a few weeks ago and she took a lot of childrens tylenol for the pain. The doctors prescribed something stronger but she hated the taste, so we gave her tylenol. I looked at the batches on the bottles and wouldn't you know that are the ones being recalled!! I guess that if it was going to do her harm it would have already?
