White House Denies Involvement in Hamas Death
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=578&e=2&u=/nm/20040322/pl_nm/mideast_usa_yassin_dc

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States strongly denied any involvement in the assassination on Monday of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and appealed for calm in the region following his death.

Speaking on morning television interviews, White House national security adviser Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) said the United States did not have advance warning of the assassination.

15. I disagree.
The N.Y.T. never intended to report the Clarke interview.

I do not see a pattern of news manipulation at the Times at the level that would indicate that they planned on not reporting the Clarke interview on the front page (I believe it is reported inside the paper). There have been many damning articles on its front page.

The O'Neill revelations are the first that come to my mind and are similar.

28. It sure is an amazing coincidence
I wonder if the administration is telling the truth about not knowing but perhaps Israel calculated that the timing of their action couldn't help but be appreciated.

I don't think any gov't needs to be painfully over-aware/hypersensitive to the timing of what they see as needed actions but I can't imagine that the Israeli gov't didn't know how the timing of the attack would affect the news cycle.

Life is full of mysteries and we may never know the truth. It might not even be a black or white issue.

7. Does anyone belive that killing this "spiritual" leader helps US or Israel
The Israeli talking heads in the US are spinning, spinning enough to make you head wheel off. The message of the day is that this man was not a "spiritual leader" eventhough thousands of Islamics say he was. It's a well-used Israeli tactic adopted by the Bush administration to define its enemies as they wish to suit their purposes no matter what millions of people feel. The only thing that this killing does is to draw some attention from the Clark allegations against this Bush administration. But this dastardly act today of killing the Hamas spiritual leader can only make matters worse all over the world and it proves that Israel DOES NOT have the best interest of either themselves or the US in mind. What do you say about a leader who performs acts that have the direct affect of getting more and more of your people killed and hated? No one ever talks about what drove the Palestinians to perform their last act of terror in Israel...it was a direct retaliation for Israeli incursions into GAza which killed 14 innocent people including one chiled shot in the back. All we ever hear is that Israel is attacking Palestinians in retaliation for a bombing as though the bombing occurred for no reason.

13. Ariel Sharon does not have good intentions
for the peace process or even his own people. The dictator Sharon and the Likud regime only care about keeping themselves in power. The more the Israeli's are attacked the more they rally around the flag. Sharon is delibertly keeping the infada going. When the people of Israeli do what the Spainards did, it will stop. (for a while anyway)
I bet the dictator Bush takes note of this. Which makes the odds of the US getting attacked sometime between June and October pretty high. Especially if his poll numbers drop below 40%. Where's the betting window?

17. Funny... how every time * *** 's ass is in the fire
something else happens to divert the news. I heard someone say they had him in their sites and could have killed him some time ago. Funny how he was killed minutes after Clarke's story came out. They knew when 60 Min was on and I honestly believe they tried to bump it off the air but were a couple minutes late. But, got the job done anyway and it worked. All the news the rest of the night and so far today was about the assassination. What low-life this administration is.

I'm ashamed of our country!
I'm ashamed to be an American!
I'm ashamed of our president!

I'm also afraid of what will happen next! Now we have the the Hammas after us and for good reason! What the hell is the matter with this administration?

Then invade Israel and Palestine with the UN with John Kerry leading the troops bringing food and money! They will be honored with flowers and blessings!

Either

1. The Israelis told the White House and the White House approved it, plus provided helpful advice on the timing.

Or

2. The Israelies, recognizing that the Bush White House are idiots, didn't even bother to tell them.

Oh yes. There is a vanishingly small chance that C. Rice is telling the truth. Vanishing small. Not statistically significant.

34. Even if the WH didn't know...
...it is silly for it to plead ignorance now. Israel's intentions toward the sheik have hardly been a mystery.

Nor is it a mystery what the attack costs us. This act of terror exposes our nation to the danger of retaliatory terrorism because we are seen around the world as its underwriters--its accessory.

By flouting US public opinion--which favors an equitable approach to the Middle East--our politicians have put us in this unfair and unwanted role.

Morally and pragmatically, it's an unacceptable burden. Israel's violent destiny need not be ours.
