Possible new Net domain names include '.xxx'
Reuters News Service

LONDON - Nine new Internet domain names, including ".xxx" for adult content and ".mail" for spam-free communications, could join the more familiar ".com" and ".net" Web site suffixes later this year.

Internet governing body the Internet Corporation for the Assignment of Names and Numbers said 10 organizations had filed proposals for the new Web domains in time for last week's deadline. A month-long public comment period starts on April 1.

The domains, which are sponsored by a variety of organisations and companies, will go through a two-month approval process before possible ratification later this year, the group said.

If each is accepted, it would bring the number of top level domains to over 20.

2. About XXX domains...
About three or four years ago, I'd read a story concerning Internet filters on public library computers, and how some groups considered it censorship if these filters were to be installed. On the other hand, concerned parents wanted some method of protecting their children from inadvertently landing on an adult site while at the library.

I had emailed some senator (I can't recall who) and suggested that all adult sites should be transferred to ".xxx" domains... allowing a fairly simple filter to screen out this, while not actually censoring the site directly.

He actually emailed back (!), and said it would be taken under advisement.

Just tryin' to help.

6. I had that idea a few years ago too
It is such a simple solution to prevent minors from accessing adult content. The browsers could be setup to prevent access to those sites with their setting. Of course the companies that make money with their filters will lose out.

Guess what. I don't care if they do. It allows parents to keep their children from having access.

3. think of the idea of "community standards"...
didn't the idea of "community standards" originate from the right in their fight against pornography?

if this .xxx domain is implemented, couldn't the domain be considered a "community" of sorts?

would this help stop the rights attempts to censor the net?

the "community standards" would be much different for the .xxx "neighborhood" than for the .com, .org and .net neighborhoods.
