BP says ‘top kill’ unlikely before Tuesday in Gulf oil spill
Source: The Associated Press

BP now says it will likely be at least Tuesday before engineers can shoot heavy mud into a blown-out well spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Three ultra-deepwater rigs and other equipment are at the site where the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded April 20. They're preparing for a delicate procedure called a "top kill" that BP hopes will stop the flow of oil from the well.

6. Maybe if we all think positively towards this action of theirs
Edited on Fri May-21-10 03:05 PM by Trillo
it will help. I sincerely hope this effort of theirs succeeds!

There's plenty of time for finger pointing and blame and sanctions later.

9. I've heard this is their 'Hail Mary' play.
If it wasn't delicate and couldn't potentially go south, why didn't they attempt this operation weeks ago?

11. Well...
They were hoping to salvage enough oil to cover the maximum cost damages per the 1990 Oil Production act and cover their losses on the platform as well. Of course the maximum liability is 75 million dollars so they probably collected that fairly quickly.

12. That $75 million limit for offshore spills does not apply to suits brought under state law.
Bobby Jindal should be speaking with his Attorney General as I type. Oil is a messy business in more ways than one.

24. IIRC, the $75M limit doesn't apply in cases of willful negligence.
Since the stories about the rig and about BP executives seem to confirm that they were deliberately cutting safety corners, we can argue that this is willful and deliberate negligence and malfeasance at work, and I remember something in that law that makes the $75M limit inapplicable.

13. Because they did not want to plug a hole they drilled at some expense. Plus,
they were hoping to get some oil out of the gusher. Now that we can actually see the gusher, they must stop it. After a month has passed!

17. BP delays attempt to plug leak with mud
Source: msnbc.com

ROBERT, La. - It will be at least Tuesday before engineers can shoot mud into a blown-out well at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, BP said Friday in yet another delay in the monthlong effort to stop the oil that is now washing into wetlands and onto at least one public beach.

A so-called "top kill" has been tried on land but never 5,000 feet underwater, so scientists and engineers have spent the past week preparing and taking measurements to make sure it will stop the oil that has been spewing into the sea for a month. They originally hoped to try it as early as this weekend.

BP spokesman Tom Mueller said there was no snag in the preparations, but that the company must get equipment in place and finish tests before the procedure can begin. BP already has three deepwater rigs and other equipment near the blown-out well.

//snip//

Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said Friday that a mile-long tube inserted into the leaking pipe is sucking about 92,400 gallons of oil a day to the surface, a figure much lower than the 210,000 gallons a day the company said the tube was sucking up Thursday. Suttles said the higher number is the most the tube has been sucking up at any one time, while the lower number is the average.

18. They do need to make sure they don't blow up the blowout preventer.
Edited on Sun May-23-10 01:24 AM by backscatter712
They're gonna be shooting drilling mud into the BP at insanely high pressures to overwhelm the oil pressure coming up from the well.

Keep in mind that the gushing oil has a lot of sand in it, that's been grinding at the inside of that BP for a month now.

If they use too much pressure, they could blow the BP apart completely in which case we're completely SOL until the relief well is finished in August...

19. they have to inject the drilling mud @ pressures greater than what the oil ...
..... and gas are coming out @. If this does not work they will have to look @ other methods
such as exploding around the well w/ multiple charge @ different depths to collapse
the rock and earth into the well. However w/ the huge methane deposit "down there"
this has risks too.

Thanx U.S. Supreme Court Dec. 2000 for putting Dick Cheney into power. :grr:
