Chrysler to add 1,100 workers at Detroit factory
Source: Associated Press

DETROIT – Chrysler says it will add nearly 1,100 workers at a Detroit factory because of expected demand for the redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicle.
Most of the workers will be new hires, which Chrysler can pay around $14 per hour. That's about half the hourly wage rate of current factory workers represented by the United Auto Workers.
The workers will staff a second shift at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant.
Chrysler says the new vehicle is due in showrooms in June.

Thank God we didn't listen to the Republicans and let Chrysler go belly up

2. It would have been a lot more than that, if Chrysler and GM had been allowed to go belly up

7. $14 a hour?
That's about half the hourly wage rate of current factory workers represented by the United Auto Workers.

So it begins...

8. Well, at least $14 per hour is a living wage......
and a HELL of a lot better than what I've been seeing lately.....

That said, when I'm jumping up and down over $14 per hour, it's pretty sad.

I wonder if the stamping plant in Twinsburg will be hiring again?

9.  Funny
"This day will go down in history that Chrysler is indeed the comeback kid," United Auto Workers Vice President General Holiefield said.

And comeback and comeback and comeback. Too bad Studebaker couldn't have gotten in on the comeback express. Actually, Volkswagen wanted Studebaker but Nixon nixed the idea.

10. Chrysler adds 1,100 jobs at Detroit Jeep plant
Source: AP

DETROIT – Chrysler Group LLC gave a big boost to the battered Michigan economy Friday when it announced plans to add about 1,100 workers to help build the new Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The company made the announcement at a Detroit factory as it celebrated the start of Grand Cherokee production. Chrysler said it expects strong sales of the new sport utility vehicle, which is due in showrooms next month.

Almost all the workers will be new hires, which Chrysler can pay about $14 per hour, about half the hourly rate received by current workers represented by the United Auto Workers union. The workers will staff a second shift at the factory, called the Jefferson North Assembly Plant, starting July 19.

The announcement is good news for Michigan, which has the highest unemployment rate in the nation at 14 percent and has struggled for years with the decline of Detroit's automakers.

17. Hopefully this results in more jobs elsewhere
Like all the little feeder factories who supply parts for auto production. Auto jobs have a ripple effect.
