Possible change in loop current could keep oil spill off Treasure Coast (oh really??)

University of Miami oceanographer Peter Ortner cautioned, though, that while computer models show the Loop Current might be getting close to shedding an eddy at its northern end, it’s far from a sure thing.

“I take that with a huge grain of salt,” Ortner said.

Huge grain of salt... BP is now issuing weather/ocean current reports it seems.

1. Saying anything to keep the public in the dark
Are they trying to fool the vacationers that would be coming to the beaches this summer?

4. If oil gets into the Gulfstream... there will be more than tar balls floating up...
Edited on Sat May-22-10 10:43 AM by lib2DaBone
Dead fish by the millions Will float up along with oil soaked birds of every kind.

Oil is still gushing from the underwater volcano and now they say it is equivalent to the Exxon- Valdez spill every day that it continues to gush.

Oil has been flowing for what.. 30 days now? They "may" be able to shut it off in 3 months?

9. Nothing.
The Gulf is salt water. Any aquifer that Gulf water's seeped into's been contaminated for human use already--such things have happened as aquifers near coasts have been drained and salt water's seeped in. Unless it's desalinated, of course. I'm unaware of any desalination plants that rely on well water.

If there are any desalination plants where the oil goes they'd have to shut down.

The amount of the volatile fractions that gets brought back to earth in rain is going to be trivial. It'll be oxidized in the atmosphere.

10. Or something...

I saw a segment about this on the news but can't find it online. Here is what News 13's Chief Meteorologist Jeff Day had to say on the Florida Aquifer:

there is also “infiltration”, where water seeps through the soil and into the “stratum” zone. That water is referred to as “groundwater”, and help to fuel the aquifer.

Oil will enter the inlets and rivers here in southeast Florida.

Booms will do little to seal things off, as evidenced by what is happening in Louisiana at the moment.

Summer storms coming from the east will push the mix of benzene, tar, dispersant, and heavy metals that have entered the rivers further into the streams.

It appears this is going to be a huge disaster that contaminates the area's food, water and air supply. But I probably won't wait for our officials to inform the public.

6. I believe this is a most conservative estimate as to what has gushed so far.
Edited on Sat May-22-10 02:02 PM by Uncle Joe

"At least 210,000 gallons of oil have been spewing from a damaged well at the bottom of the Gulf for the past month. The Deepwater Horizon rig exploded April 20, killing 11 people. It sank two days later."

Thanks for the thread, salazarmms.

8. Scientifc estimates put it at around 6,000,000 gallons a day, conservatively
then there is the issue of if they'll ever cap it off. and how much is actually in the tapped reservoir.
