US And South Korea To Test Military Force As An Affront To North Korea
Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. and South Korea are planning two major military exercises off the Korean Peninsula in response to North Korea's torpedo attack on a South Korean warship.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters on Monday the joint exercises conducted in the "near future" will test the nations' ability to defeat submarines and to monitor and prevent illicit activities.

Whitman says the exercises are being planned as a result of the March 26 attack, in which a torpedo blew up a South Korean warship and killed 46 Korean sailors.

2. Interesting, and admit I am of two minds on this one...
li'l Kim needs to understand that the South Korean/American defense alliance is solid, and capable.

On the other hand

One wonders about the wisdom of stick-poking when tensions are escalating rapidly.

3. Unavoidable, but tragic response, I'm afraid.
I know I'll get flamed for that, but we do have defensive obligations.

6. joint exercises are a fact of life there
Every year South Korea, the US and other countries participate in joint operations on the Korean Peninsula. Key Resolve and Foal Eagle, Courageous Channel name just two of them. I don't know if Team Spirit is still an active exercise. These 'training' exercises use live munitions and actually bomb the hell out of the mountains and beaches. Squadrons of helicopters and aircraft fill the skies as thick as flocks of birds. Should anyone be surprised that these operations were taking place at the time of the sinking of the ship? As an aside, does anyone remember the USS Pueblo (AGER-2) - it is now a museum in North Korea.
