RNC document reveals bleak financial standing
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) - An internal Republican National Committee document obtained by CNN paints a damning picture of the committee's financial standing compared to the past five election cycles.

The document, pulled together during a recent review sparked by concerns over RNC spending practices, said the committee had $12.5 million in cash on hand at the end of April.

By comparison, the average cash on hand at the end of April from 2002-2009 was $40.4 million. And that average includes the odd numbered years when there are fewer election contests.

Looking only at even-numbered years, this year's $12.5 million end of April COH is less than one-third the amount the RNC had on hand on April 30 for the 2002 ($47 million) and the 2006 ($44.6 million) midterms.

1. Looks like the GOOPers have become too greedy for their own good
They're unwilling to share the largesse made possible by their bought-and-paid-for repukes with the party apparatchiks responsible for getting them reelected to 'public' office. Complacency probably plays a role as well, seeing that they've succeeded in transferring the lion's share of wealth into their own pockets. I'm sure the nobles felt similarly sated just prior to the French Revolution.

10. Well, to be fair, I'd have to say the campaign funds started to dry up
long before Steele became chairman. However, he's done a bang up job of keeping them dried up. Long may he rave.

I doubt even Big Oil is willing to make up the difference, although I fully expect them to shell out at least that much in attack ads between now and early November, 2012.

Still, even those overstuffed campaign coffers along with dragging the fundies out to vote against the evil gay agenda of forming stable families didn't do the trick in 2006 or 2009.

They can't lie their way in, they can't buy their way in. Let's hope they don't manage to cheat their way in again, that has worked out very, very badly for the country.

21. RNC funds drying up
Edited on Mon May-24-10 04:43 PM by docb
This is a pattern on both sides..The Dem orgs are having a similiar problem--just not as deep. But with no solutions or ideas what would one expect?
Now the GOP is asking the voters to give them new ideas..THAT MEANS A Truly EMPTY BARREL!-- NO MONEY AND NO SOLUTIONS!!!New web site asks for ideas but they do not say they will use them! Typical!

32. Uh Earl the leaking of the memo is actually Steele's pink slip

The significance of the memo is

1) Republican funds are being syphoned away from the RNC

2) Republican higher ups are leaking damaging statistics about Steele.

MS is now officially on the clock. Either they will take him out in the next few weeks or they will keep him in until the Nov elections are over and let him take the blame.

Either way Steele is now officially dead meat.

It was fun while it lasted.

"a damning picture of the committee's financial standing compared to the past five election cycles"? That's the prettiest prose I've seen outside of one of Keith Olbermann's special comment!

18. Palin, Piyush, and Paul
oh my!

They are finding themselves not only spending too much in the strip joints and supporting SOs and 2nd families on the side, but have been forced to spend even MORE money trying to win primaries against their own astroturf teabagger creations, so they can even get to a point where they can run against a Democrat. They have allowed the Ps and their kin ilk to run amok!

30. That is the whole point of the article

The fact that it has been leaked is to start building the case to take him out.

They are going to keep him until the Congressional elections are over and then he will be tagged with the blame if they don't succeed.

26. Thanks to the fascist SCOTUS, "hard money" means almost nothing
regular RNC money will be dwarfed by soft money, on which there is no accounting, no control, no limits, and no paper trail. this means absolutely zero.

28. This means nothing...
While the majority of small money contributions to the RNC is dwindling in both frequency and amount.

Don't think for a second that the big money donors will stop filling the pockets of republican politicians. In fact with the recent supreme court decision corporations can donate unlimited financial contributions. It will be harder now than it ever has been to out fund raise the republican elite.
