BP sees hope for new effort within a week

Company switches focus from stopping Gulf oil surge to containing it

updated 56 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - BP is optimistic that its latest attempt to stop the gush of oil from a broken well in the Gulf of Mexico could show results by the end of the week, the company’s managing director said Sunday in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The new strategy is being tried after company abandoned its most ambitious bid yet for a temporary fix Saturday when BP said the “top kill” option — an attempt to overwhelm the broken well with heavy fluids and junk — had failed.

That strategy, which sought to stop the flow of oil, was always a long shot, Robert Dudley, the company’s managing director and head of disaster management, told NBC’s David Gregory on Sunday.

The probability is “much better” that the new approach, which seeks to contain the spread of the oil, will show good results this week, he said.

6. Cried wolf, or failed to?
They were aware they had problems with Deepwater Horizon a year ago:

Documents show early worries about rig safety

WASHINGTON - Internal documents from BP show that there were serious problems and safety concerns with the Deepwater Horizon rig far earlier than those the company described to Congress last week.

The problems involved the well casing and the blowout preventer, which are considered critical pieces in the chain of events that led to the disaster on the rig.

The documents show that in March, after several weeks of problems on the rig, BP was struggling with a loss of “well control.” And as far back as 11 months ago, it was concerned about the well casing and the blowout preventer.

On June 22, for example, BP engineers expressed concerns that the metal casing the company wanted to use might collapse under high pressure.

Let the punishment equal the gravity of the crime! Be it negligence and/or willful, the corporate veil must be pierced. Time to get all China on their ass.

Oh ... well ... no. Don't forget that BP is in bed with the US Military and the relationship is not platonic. So, as long as the General's are rustling under the covers, (could be an orgy what with Haliburton, et al) we can't expect their main squeeze(s) to get anything but special treatment.

Justice marches on at the pinnacle of the destructive power of the Military-Industrial-Corporate State!

Dream on, fellow Peasants.

Let all the executives AND their families spend 18 hours a day cleaning up the marshes and beaches. Fine them personally too.

7. "which seeks to contain the spread of the oil,"
That's NOT plugging the hole, mind you. They've given up on that. Now they're going for containment, the failure of which will be equally as epic.

12. Their probability calculations are asinine. The relief well is the best bet, why not just admit it?
The well being 5000 feet below the surface of the ocean means all these approaches have never been tried before and most have little probability of working.

14. So much damage has been done..
that the cynic in me says I hope they aren't successful in stopping the leak to the point that every person in American wakes up and sees that deregulation is a bad thing and corporate influence in our Government needs to be stopped.

In a weird way this rig explosion can be a blessing in disguise...I might take a lot of shit for that comment and I apologize in advance.

I live on the Gulf Coast and I hate to see this destruction but it has woken some people up to the fact that offshore drilling is bad, especially without every safety apparatus available implemented in the oil rigs construction, and that corporate interests are our governments only interests.

Maybe this catastrophe was needed to show the harsh realties and consequences of corporations actions, and how their shady back room deals with corrupt government regulators can directly affect our livelihoods.

22. Have we stopped drilling offshore?
I see where your coming from, I myself said it was better here than somewhere in Alaska that no one can see for themselves. We do need a wake up call. I just wish this nightmare was over. But the drilling continues elsewhere. All just ticking time bombs. If they let a bridge in Minnesota come crashing down which by the way is above sea level, who knows how many other rigs are just holding on by a thread.

Edited on Sun May-30-10 12:18 PM by wordpix
never tried any of these methods in 5,000+ ft of water before and they should not have gotten a permit to begin with for that reason. They had no backup plan. Period. :grr:

21. Top Kill a "Long Shot?
They assured us that it had a 60 - 70 % chance of working. That's a long shot to them?

Oh yes, dear citizens - We have been and are continuing to be lied to each and every day.

The Gulf will be dead by the time this "spill" is stopped.

Get yourselves and your communities ready for the Diaspora, we should welcome them with open arms.

in oil gushing while they try to put the cap on. Does not sound promising.
