NYC on major storm alert; tornado watch in effect Sunday (tornado watch until 8 p.m.)
Source: New York Daily News

The New York City area is under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. Sunday as storms approach the area, the National Weather Service announced.

The five boroughs will likely see thunderstorms by mid-afternoon that could drench the area in up to an inch of rain in under one hour.

Tornadoes are possible during those storms, said Brandon Smith, a National Weather Service meteorologist, but the most likely severe weather side effects will be damaging winds and large hail.

"It's a strong cold front coming in and there's lots of heat and humidity out ahead of it," Smith said.

My wife and I loved that show. I am pretty sure she would leave me for Bruce. At least for a few hours.

2. Yeah, damn near all of PA is on a tornado watch until 8 p.m. too.
Right now it is sunny, but we had a short and really nasty storm blow through about an hour ago.

6. Weird Stuff
We had a tornado (F1) touch down here in NorCal near DT Sacramento a few years ago. Never happened before. And to boot--2 funnel clouds that did not touch down, but swirled around on north end of town near airport. Bizarre.

8. Don't know what the odds are for tornado in NJ ....
I'll have to look it up --

but, when you heat up the atmosphere -- GW -- you get chaotic weather conditions.

We're finally getting some heavy rain here now -- a little wind -- and we sure need

a cooling off!!

Good luck!!

:)

7. Just coming at us in eastern Mass. We got thru a "Walk for Life" fundraiser last night
without the predicted tornadoes or thunderstorms...
Hundreds of kids and families camped on open fields and a HS track---whew!

We're hoping for some more luck today...

27. Thanks. Relay for Life are annual overnight fundraisers by almost 4 million people in 5000
cities and towns in the US and is considered one of the largest fundraiser on the planet. Proceeds of which go for a host of cancer related research and local cancer victim and family support services. Not to be confused with recent smatterings of anti-abortion rallies that attracted possibly 10,000 anti-choice protesters calling themselves 'walk for life'.

Thanks for the well wishes for my little brother. Unfortunately for us he lost his too short battle against pancreatic cancer.

And our country lost a prominent journalist battling government and corporate corruption.

28. I'm very sorry for your loss. Did you see the article on pancreatic
cancer on today's N.Y. Times website? It tells about a small amount of progress finally being made on this disease. Perhaps your family's fundraising helped make this possible.

12. In 2001,
there were tornadoes in Maryland. Ripped up College Park and Beltsville pretty good, uprooting a forest, skipping over the beltway, and tearing roofs off whole neighborhoods. There were two fatalities, but it was a miracle the death toll wasn't higher.

You're right -- it is rare. But it happens.

what a great job they're doing and how they "care"

Same with full page ads in all major newspapers!

Where else could that money go that might do more good?

16. Has there ever been a tornado in Manhattan?
I remember a few growing up in New England, but I'm imagining something like a scene from The Day After Tomorrow where those twisters ripped up L.A.
