Iraq disarms Sunni tribal militias
Source: mwc news

Sunni tribal fighters of the Sahwa movement or Awakening Councils in Iraq have now been barred by the authorities from carrying arms.

Leaders of the councils that helped US-led forces to fight al-Qaeda and its allies responded angrily to the ban on Sunday.

They threatened to stop co-operating with security forces in the mainly Sunni province of Diyala.

Khalid al-Luhaibi, head of the Sahwa movement in Diyala, said the order withdrawing weapons permits must be cancelled.

"How can we work and do our jobs if we are not eligible to carry weapons?" he said. "How can we, at least, protect ourselves?"

4. Hmm, ask the Turks. The Iranians.
Hell, ask King Richard the Lionhearted about that Kurdish guy, Salah al-Din.

2. Maliki and Chalabi are trying to nullify the election results, so this is predictable
Edited on Mon Jun-07-10 01:09 PM by ck4829
This action has more to do with keeping Maliki in power, by any means necessary, than this country moving on past all the bloodshed.

3. They can take away the right to carry arms, but likely can't disarm them.
And they have shown that they can be effective as insurgents. Talk about asking for trouble!

5. Heck if they just stop
They are basically the "security" in those regions. If they just stop, the crime will shoot through the roof, and the genocide will commence once again.

9. Sadr's not the problem

He had his power taken away a long time ago.

The problem is Allawi and his group. He's been assassinating Sunni election winners and threatening violence against other Shia groups if he doesn't get his way.
