Rick Barber's Must-Watch Tea Party Ad: "Gather Your Armies"
Source: CBS News

Rick Barber, a Tea Party-affiliated candidate for Congress in Alabama's second district, released an ad Sunday in which he angrily tells men dressed as America's founding fathers that Americans are being taxed without representation, prompting the George Washington character to soberly intone that the time had come to "gather your armies."

"And I would impeach him," Barber, sitting at a table in an empty bar, says as the spot begins. "And if that's not enough - some of your men own taverns. Sam (Adams), you were a brewer, Mr. President, a distiller. You know how tough it is to run a small business without a tyrannical government on your back."

"Today, we have an internal revenue service that enforces what they call a progressive income tax," he continues. "You'll love this. Every year, if not every quarter, we're basically required to spy on ourselves. Report what we earn, who we hire and fire, with an all powerful separate court system. Without representation they could increase taxes, add costly regulations, or perform malicious audits."

According to his website, Barber is a proponent of the so-called "FairTax," which would replace the federal income tax with a national sales tax. The "all powerful separate court system" he refers to appears to be the U.S. Tax Court.

...

Barber's ad is the latest in a string of striking ads to come out of Alabama Repuboicans in the 2010 campaign cycle. Among them: Tim James' "We speak English" spot; Les Philips' forged Obama photo ad; Dale Peterson's angry horse-and-Winchester spot; and the ad from the state teachers union attacking Bradley Byrne for allegedly believing in evolution.

2. I'm not laughing - these are modern day versions of
Lester Maddox's ax handle or George Wallace standing in the school house door!

(Maddox was from Georgia, not Alabama, but still!)

5. At least Wallace had a change of heart after the assassination
attempt against him. He was given a male nurse to care for him. This nurse was a gentle black man that saw Gov Wallace as a person in need of care, not a monster. The loving care given by this nurse softened Wallace's heart and changed his mind.

All it took was one man with a big heart to change the heart of another man.

3. How is a national sales tax fair? It is not based on anything other then what
you buy...and wealthier people do not need to care that food might cost too much that day because of a tax on it.

4. Do these idiots think that if their candidate doesn't WIN, that qualifies as "taxation without
representation"? I keep reading this crap about no representation. They have it. Their candidates just lost. It is bizarre.

14. Yes, they do think that. That's part of the "taking America back" rhetoric
They really, seriously believe that they are the oppressed majority, upon whose throat rests the heel of an over-powerful minority.

7. I'm curious to know how their taxes are enforced without an IRS?
Will the tax fairy make sure all taxes are paid to the USG without an IRS?

Idiots...like a flat tax won't increase their relative tax burden while reducing it for the well off. It's a shame that these people can't grasp basic mathematical concepts.

9. Mr Barber needs to read up on the Whiskey Rebellion
which occurred on our esteemed first president's watch. George Washington was a distiller; and was apparently willing to pay an excise tax on his product.

13. He took an oath to defend the Declaration of Independence???
I just noticed that the document on the table was a copy of the Declaration of Independence. As I understand it people generally take oaths regarding the Constitution, unless that's changed.

Geez, what a dumb fuck this Barber is.

15. The crux of his lie ...
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 05:06 AM by Trajan
Taxation without representation ...

Every tax is established in the congress, and passed into law by the Representatives and Senators, who were voted into office by voters in their own districts - It is exactly taxation WITH representation .... This is the republican form of government that the Founding Fathers established ... Without his lie about 'Taxation without Representation', he has little cause for his self righteous indignation ....

Furthermore: How can you say "Those bastards are taxing us to death", and then say "There is taxation without representation' ? ... These are clearly inconsistent positions to hold ...

Their actual goal is to deny congressional majority prerogatives through lies and insinuations ... They would prefer minority rule, with lies, derision and incitement as their tools ....

It's just the kind of angry bullshit the dittoheads lap up .... All lies, and they love them ...

20. The fair tax
It sounds good, but think how unfair it can be. I have more than adequate income, and I don't have to spend much money every month, so I'd hardly be taxed at all if all I paid was sales tax.

A person who struggles to make ends meet would be taxed on every penny he earns (because he spends it all), while I could sock money into savings, tax free. That'd be great for me, but not exactly fair.
