Exxon CEO: ‘It is unfortunate that walruses were included’
Source: The Hill

ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson and other oil company executives acknowledged Tuesday that their Gulf of Mexico oil spill response plans should not have made references to walruses — a creature that does not inhabit the region.

. . .

“It is unfortunate that walruses were included. It is an embarrassment that they were included,” Tillerson said at a hearing before a House Energy and Commerce Committee panel on industry safety and energy policy.

Other executives concurred. Added ConocoPhillips CEO James Mulva: “I agree it is not appropriate to include for that region.”

. . .

“The plans are put together in response to guidelines from the Minerals Management Service,” said Chevron CEO John Watson in reference to the Interior Department agency that regulates offshore drilling.

No mention of the inclusion of the dead guy as the "go to" person for environmental issues.

It wasn't just BP using the same report for all locations, every BigOil company appears to have been using the exact same report. And BigOil is blaming MMS for their use of boilerplate safety and recovery plans.

3. "Include for that region"? Ahahahahaha!
Yep, no one thinks that you just dust off the same report for rubber stamping on each new well.

Nope, no one at all.

12. what about the sea lions, and the reference to a Japanese entertainment website?
I guess those shouldn't have been included for the region, either.

8. Don't worry, next time we'll do a "find/replace".
Replace "penguin" with "pelican", "walrus" with "dolphin", etc... then we'll have a plan to protect pelicans, dolphins, and warluses.

Problem solved. :eyes:

Apparently what we have here is a perception problem.

11. Reminds me of...
when I was teaching computers in a middle school in NYC when most of the students had yet to get a computer in the home. I was touting the virtues of word processing over typewriters. Editing, revising, reprinting were the biggies, (as spell check was not yet widely available.)

So I said, "Let's say you write a report on Romania. Next time you do a search and replace and change Romania to Estonia. It's like a new report."

"You can't do that!" the kids would say.

"Really?" Tongue now obviously in cheek, I say, "Would your teacher read your homework, or "look" at it? Would she really know the difference anyway?"

BP didn't do their homework. And MMS didn't catch it.

13. the fact MMS didn't catch it is a biggie---not one person there reads a spill response report?
You'd think this would go from one expert to another, up the chain, until it's signed by the big man himself---in this case, Salazar. But nope, no one looked at it.

Saladczar should be his new name. That's all I want that guy in charge of.

17. There is so much information that is never actually processed by a person.
They handed in the plan, and somebody checked 'em off. If somebody noticed anything, they could commit career suicide and point it out. Courageous.

20. So, on top of everything else, you Big Oil Guys are walrus-haters too, huh?
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 02:16 PM by Buns_of_Fire
So why do you Big Oil Guys want to exclude walruses from your response plan? Huh? We're awaiting your answer, Mr. Tillerson, and it better be good.

(On Edit: Yes, I know. I'm just playing prosecuting attorney, here...:-))
