Brewer rejects Goddard as counsel
Source: Arizona Republic

The war of words between Gov. Jan Brewer and Attorney General Terry Goddard escalated Monday, with Brewer formally demanding that Goddard step down from representing the state in court challenges to Arizona's controversial immigration law.

Brewer had previously expressed concerns about Goddard defending the measure, saying that his stated opposition to Senate Bill 1070 gave him a conflict of interest. She maintains that language in a subsequent bill gives her the authority to appoint her own attorney in the case.

Goddard, meanwhile, has said the governor's position infringes on his rights as attorney general.

In recent weeks, the two parties were said to be working toward a mutually agreeable solution. But all that changed Monday when Brewer publicly rebuked Goddard for filing a motion in one of the pending lawsuits without first seeking her approval.

So, the person who wasn't elected Governor by the people of Arizona is telling the person who was elected AG by the people of Arizona how to represent the interests of the people of Arizona...

2. It's political posturing of course.
Terry is running against the accidental governor for governor.

3. OMG, this SO pisses me off!!!!
I live in Arizona and have to be subjected to this crazy bullshit. I really like Terry Goddard, so I'm not surprised Brewer is twisting his arm. I hope she loses the battle. I can't wait to move out of here like a bat out of hell (not for another 5 years though, until my daughter graduates high school, ::sigh::).

5. If a Democratic governor did this...
- i.e., tried to trump the authority of an ELECTED, Republican attorney general - the umbrage and indignation from the right would be deafening. They'd throw down the "he was elected by the people" card for the AG like they did with Bush in his first term, and make a sedition claim.

The presumed hypocrisy is more deafening than the would-be indignation.

6. Political posturing for the election
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 02:16 PM by SargeUNN
Brewer knows that the immigration issue is big and she wants to paint Goddard as being the bad guy on this issue so the misinformed and hate mongers will support her. Sadly, I have found most here in Arizona have little understanding of the issues and believe false statements made by Brewer, McCain, Arpaio and others that the crime produced by this portion of the population has increased even though the real facts show that it has actually decreased.

It also puts Goddard in a position where if he tells the real facts or exposes the real problems it will be claimed he isn't capable of doing his job as AG thereby giving Brewer not only cover to make sure he doesn't get to do his sworen duty, but to paint him into a corner to resign as AG, giving Brewer the decision as to whom will replace him. This also can be pointed to in the campaign as Goddard being "soft" on illegal immigrants" just like President Obama.

Meanwhile the real problems associated with the problem will be ignored and false claims will gain validity with more people being pushed to take sides. Considering our progressive media here is not aggressive and poorly operated, you can guess how it will be played.

One other problems is that most people really don't care to look at the real make up of undocumented people or realize how many got to be in that number. I have tried to expose this with little success and while the real problems are easier to solve than the phoney ones, not many want to know, let alone address, the problems that are real.

11. One thing I learned living in Arizona
A lot of dumb people, who will believe the fear that the Repukes like to spread around.

Also, the underlying hatred of people of color.

9. For the purposes of this law that is not true.
The legislature put a provision in this law that the governor could remove the attorney general from defending the bill if she so desired. Goddard has already said he would defend the law against any challenges.

10. This is why we must never surrender offices to the enemy.
That is what happened. The office of Arizona governor was handed to a fascist on a silver platter. There is NEVER an excuse for this. NEVER. No one is that indispensable, and certainly not Janet Napolitano.

And make no mistake. Brewer is not a mere opponent - she is indeed an ENEMY. Let us please agree on that.

12. I agree
People like her have always been the enemy in my eyes, it's just that others want to sit around a fire and sing Cumbaya.

Because they think that you can use reason with fanatics, it just don't work. Talking is only effective if the other side is willing to listen and willing to work together.

People like Brewer don't want to talk, they "want their country back".

13. Yep - saracat predicted dire results for AZ if Napolitano was
picked for DHS... from Nov. 20, 2008:

Arizona will be destroyed for years to come if Janet Napolitano leaves.

In the same thread I said "I hope President Obama will call on Janet Napolitano to serve in 2010, AFTER her term as Governor ends."

I often wonder if Pres. Obama had any idea AZ was going to go this wrong without Janet Napolitano, and if he privately has had any regrets.

(I don't expect him to ever publicly admit he would do things differently now...)
