Canadian oil spill technology may head to the Gulf of Mexico

ST. JOHN'S, N.L./WASHINGTON — St. John's-based Rutter Inc. is in talks with the U.S. Coast Guard about sending three oil-spill detection radar systems to help track the massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Rutter president Fraser Edison said the Sigma S6 radar technology will be useful when a more detailed cleanup at sea begins in the Gulf.

Right now, cleanup efforts are focusing on beaches and capturing oil from the ruptured well.

"As you get out offshore the oil breaks up and is in patches all over the place, then they're going to need the sort of equipment that we have to put on these ships."

Rutter recently tested the radar system in Norway where it proved effective in detecting and tracking oil spills in all types of weather conditions, Edison said.
