McChrystal tells Army he'll retire
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 06:18 PM by avaistheone1
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who was fired last week as the top U.S. general in the stalemated Afghanistan war, told the Army on Monday that he will retire.

Army spokesman Col. Tom Collins said McChrystal, 55, notified the service of his plans, but he has not yet submitted formal retirement papers. It is not clear when he will leave the service, but the process usually take a few months.

In announcing McChrystal's ouster on Wednesday, President Barack Obama praised his long Army career but said his intemperate remarks in a magazine article that appeared last week could not be abided.

McChrystal apologized for the remarks in Rolling Stone magazine and flew to Washington last week to resign as commanding general of the war.

5. It's too bad
He actually was a very good general, regardless of what the media made him out to be. Doesn't excuse his carelessness while around the press nor his staff's lapses as well, but everyone I've talked to that has worked under him thought very highly of him.

13. What makes you think he's a neocon?
Many retired generals wind up leaning left and turn out to be Democrats.

19. McChrystal & Petraeous are Neocons
I have a friend reporter in Washington, she tells me both generals are neocons, the link is Gates/Cheney/Kristol etc. Petraeous has presidential ambitions. Both of them are surrounded by a group of officers who, according to my friend, are real arseholes. And this lady happens to be right wing, works for a fairly right wing media outfit.

17. Army spokesman says McChrystal to retire
Source: CNN.com

Washington (CNN) -- Gen. Stanley McChrystal, removed last week as the top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, has told the Army he will retire, Army spokesman Gary Tallman said Monday.

No date was set for the retirement of McChrystal, a four-star general who assumed command of U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan last year.

McChrystal was replaced on Wednesday by President Obama after disclosure of a magazine article in which the general and top aides disparaged top administration officials including Vice President Joe Biden and National Security Adviser Jim Jones.

Obama praised McChrystal's service record but said the general exhibited poor judgment. Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. Central Command commander, was named to replace McChrystal in Afghanistan.
