Judge refuses to dismiss case against Air Force translator

JIM WASSERMAN
Associated Press

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - A military judge on Thursday refused to dismiss espionage and other charges against a U.S. Air Force translator who worked at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
(snip)

In seeking to have the charges against his client dismissed, Donald G. Rehkopf, a civilian and the lead defense attorney, said his military counterparts have greater access to evidence than he does and he's unable to present a meaningful defense.
(snip)

He's been in custody for attempting to deliver more than 180 e-mail messages from detainees to Syria, and for failing to report contacts with the Syrian Embassy to his superiors. He's also accused of repeatedly lying to Air Force investigators.
(snip)

From November 2002 through July 2003, Al Halabi translated letters to and from prisoners, provided library books, translated for military police during camp "riots" and at the medical clinic for sick or injured prisoners, including more than one attempted suicide, according to court filings.

1. Who really knows...
Probably no one ever will--could be anything. But no reason why it couldn't just be a guy who had a little pity on the prisoners.
