Body of Soldier Who Disappeared in Training Exercise Off Key West Is Found by Civilian Boater

KEY WEST, Fla. -- A body found Friday in the waters off this island city was that of a soldier who disappeared after he was dropped into the ocean from a helicopter, the Army said.

As part of a training exercise, the 20-year-old Army soldier was dropped from a helicopter into the waters off Fleming Key on Tuesday. He signaled he was in distress and sank without a trace.

The military searched for days, but it was a civilian boater who spotted the body Friday morning, U.S. Army Special Operations Command said. The Army was investigating the death.

The soldier's name was not released.
