Arizona sheriff launches 17th immigration sweep

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he timed it for the day SB 1070 takes effect to send a message: that nothing is changing despite a court ruling on the law.

With most of Arizona's new immigration law blocked by a judge, controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio launched his 17th "crime suppression" sweep in Maricopa County, pledging late Thursday afternoon to have his deputies and volunteers check the immigration status of those arrested.

"We're looking for anybody who violates the law," he said. "If we find any illegal aliens, they are going to be arrested."

The operation began about 4 p.m. after being delayed for several hours while his deputies responded to demonstrations outside the county jail in Phoenix. During those protests, several people were arrested and others detained, including a legal observer and a news photographer.

It's been dragging on, with no results yet...

His tent city jail remains under court oversight for civil rights violations.

All the conservatives in the United States were all "there's no racial profiling, there won't be any racial profiling, this law is all about doing the job the federal government refuses to do." (And to this I say, sure we could round up every illegal immigrant in America and send them right back where they came from. Just let us jack up taxes to about 80 percent and nationalize an oil company, so we'll have the money to hire enough enforcement agents to do it and we'll have enough fuel to haul them back to the border.") Now it's the end of July, and fucking Arpaio is planning immigration sweeps and he's probably got more than a few roadblocks planned. I hate being right.

Some good news: In 2 days of sweeps, Joe only arrested 36 this time (about half his average for a sweep) because he had to divert officers to deal with the protests and got a late start. And only 6 of those arrested were suspected illegal immigrants. I posted this in GD:
