Karzai to dissolve all private security firms
(AFP) – 56 minutes ago

KABUL — Afghan President Hamid Karzai is to dissolve all international and domestic private security companies operating in the country, his spokesman said Tuesday.

"Dissolving the private security companies is a serious programme that the government of Afghanistan will execute," Waheed Omer told reporters, adding that "very soon the president of Afghanistan will set a deadline".

Omer said Karzai had spoken to his Western backers as well as leaders of the US and NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) who contract the companies to safeguard many aspects of their work, including supply convoys.

"Over the past few days the president held discussions with officials from our allied countries, with NATO and ISAF leaders and all those involved," said Omer.

1. "This is a programme that will be executed at any cost," he said.
And lots of savings for us! Can someone remind me how much these mercenaries cost?

I wonder what sort of timescale he's thinking of.

Thanks for posting. :hi:

2. I don't believe Karsai
He's lying to the Afghans. I think this is old time politicking in the third world. It has a double purpose. Mollify the people in Kabul which is the only place he has any power, and mollify the US because we're making demands that he take over the security of his country.

4. I expect he may suddenly fall victim to a bombing attack.
 There are billions at stake for Blackwater and they aren't about to let some tin horn dictator kick them out of their gravy bowl.

6. Blackwater leads the US around by the nose, I doubt they are going to let
little ol' Karzai take their meal ticket.

8. Yep! Bye-bye, Karzai. Does he really think he runs things around there? ..
Maybe he should reflect on what happened to Saadam, who was "our guy", until he wasn't "our guy" anymore.

Get a rope!

7. once the deposits to his offshore accounts have been verified, he'll back off
this is like the Dems threatening to reform certain industries -- once their bribes are recieved, the threat disappears.

9. didn't the "president" of Iraq try this as well?
and if I remember correctly, it failed epically.

Yeah, right Hamid. You should be careful in your use of adjectives to describe your intent. Especially words like: "execute."

Because if he thinks that the military-industrial-financial-complex is going to allow a mere hand-puppet to make decisions for his country, well then he don't know democracy.

- Not the America version of democracy anyways.......

on edit: spelling
