Insiders expect Majette to run for Miller's seat
U.S. Rep. Denise Majette will hold a news conference today at the state Capitol to address speculation that she is running for the U.S. Senate, according to campaign officials.

Leaders of the state Democratic Party and people close to Majette (D-Stone Mountain) expect her to announce she will launch a bid for the Senate after only two years in Congress.

Majette's campaign spokeswoman, Cindy Abel, has said only that the congresswoman is prepared today to discuss "rumors" of her Senate aspirations.

Majette did not return calls for comment.

snip...

Until now, all signs indicated that Majette was preparing for a highly anticipated rematch against McKinney, whom Majette defeated with stunning ease in the 2002 Democratic primary. McKinney, Georgia's first African-American woman in Congress, declared her candidacy Saturday.

Majette's entry in the Senate race would complicate the picture for the Democratic Party, which has struggled to come up with a big-name candidate since Miller decided last year to retire when his term ends.

This should be interesting. Zell (and thousands of GOP crossover voters) helped Majette beat McKinney in the 2002 primary.

...who got his marching orders from the NeoCons, who are also supported by Saudi Arabia.

And your point was...?

11. What ever happened to the "Don't ask<->Don't tell" policy
I keep on thinking I must be crazier than I am, then I read the news, at that point I realize I was correct, and should have never picked up the news in the first place.

4. I hope Majette stays in Congress.
I will have to vote against McKinney no matter who is running, and I am not sure that Majette has a chance running for the Senate seat. I am not sure this is a wise move for us Dems in Georgia, and for Majette personally.

10. Majette Seeks Senate Seat

Denise Majette is a moderate Democrat, as opposed to Zell Miller, a rabidly right-wing pseudo-Democrat. She beat Cynthia McKinney in the 2002 primary because thousands of Republicans voted for her. I'm still unhappy with her for her role in the hatchet job on Cynthia, but she's got to be a better Senate choice than anybody the Republicans would put up.

McKinney was ousted mainly because of lies (repeated frequently in the media until they took on the air of truth):

13. It was not just lies that ousted her.
She lost a large part of her support because of her affiliation with Arab groups and the perception that she would sacrifice national security for money. This perception may or may not be true, but she did very little to abate the issue during her last year in office and during the campaign. As well, her father became a hindrance to her because, racially, he is very partisan.

19. Care to point out the "lies" you think she's told?...
....Or haven't you been paying attention lately to the sworn testimony of Clarke before the 911 Commission?

12. How would this "complicate the picture"?
I don't understand this. The Dems haven't been able to find anyone to run for an open seat. For the life of me, I don't see how Majette getting into the race makes the situation any worse than it is. While I don't see Majette winning the race, she did attract considerable support from independents and Republicans in her race against McKinney. And Zell Miller is on the record saying good things about her. So she can't be tagged as just another liberal Democrat.

Sure, there are probably stronger candidates out there, but since none of them have the courage to actually enter the race, I say congratulations for Majette.

15. I am afraid of losing two spots . . .
one in Congress and one in Senate. I believe Denise will be fighting against some well known people for the Congressional seat. She is a shoe-in to keep her current position.

I just would much rather have Denise than Cynthia representing me.

17. You really think she has no chance?
I have always thought she would have a better chance than most other Democrats would, especially since she's automatically tagged as "moderate" because of how she came to office. I think this one should really be explored.

If only we had the confederate flag referendum promised by Perdue, this election would really be interesting--with a stratospheric Black turnout.

21. I think she has a chance, but she will be the underdog in the senate race.
She already owns the congressional seat and would beat McKinney in the primary for congress.

That's three strikes against her in a statewide Georgia election.

14. Can she win it?
I'd like to see her get elected Senator. Would McKinney then try to get her House seat back?

16. I am not sure that Denise can win the Senate seat.
She would be the underdog in that race. Cynthia McKinney has already announced that she is going run for the 4th Congressional district. If Denise remains in Congress, then there will be a democratic primary race between Denise and Cynthia.

18. No... Majette is vacating the 4th CD seat
She isn't running for two nominations at the same time.

That would be a wee bit controvesial.

McKinney is running for re-election to the GA 4th CD seat.

22. McKinney is running to unseat Majette,
should Majette choose to run for Congress again. I am afraid that Majette will lose the senate bid and McKinney will lose her bid for the 4th district. FYI . . . McKinney is not running for "re-election" in the traditional sense. Majette defeated McKinney in the last election.
