Franklin Graham: 'President's Problem Is That He Was Born A Muslim' (VIDEO)
Eric Kleefeld | August 20, 2010, 9:38AM

Franklin Graham, the Christian evangelist and son of Billy Graham, offered an explanation for the suspicions that some people have about President Obama's religion, during an appearance Thursday night on CNN.

"I think the president's problem is that he was born a Muslim, his father was a Muslim. The seed of Islam is passed through the father like the seed of Judaism is passed through the mother. He was born a Muslim, his father gave him an Islamic name," Graham told John King. "Now it's obvious that the president has renounced the prophet Mohammed and he has renounced Islam and he has accepted Jesus Christ. That's what he says he has done, I cannot say that he hasn't. So I just have to believe that the president is what he has said."

For the record, Obama's father was Barack Hussein Obama, who gave the future president his own name. President Obama has written that his father, who he rarely ever saw, was raised a Muslim but was in practice an atheist.

am I being paranoid, forgetful or downright crazy, did the SCOTUS sometime last year or the year before say that the media could lie? That it is alright to lie over the airwaves. Why else are people like F. Graham able to say those things. It is people like him that give the Christian religion a really bad name. If a pastor or evangelist can say things like that and get by with it what on earth can we do about it? If we do not rebuke him for it he will only concoct other lies and tell them.

What a sneaky, slimy hypocritical charlatan Billy was! His son is just too stupid to play the game well. So much for Christian education!

58. That's a great point!
Wow, such an obvious truth staring me right in the face. Religious insanity is clearly passed down from generation to generation to the detriment of the entire world. Boy, you really can learn something new every day!

Comments like Graham's make me proud to be an atheist. I was raised Catholic, but never really believed in it and just went through the motions to please my parents as I suspect most kids do. The minute I was able to stop going to church, I headed for the exit. I only go into any church or temple for weddings or funerals.

Sadly, I can only see this country going further down the road of believing in a non-existent sky god. I think we're destined to end up like the Muslim extremists who sacrifice themselves to get their 72 virgins. The worse things get in the U.S., the more I think religion will rise since life here will be even more shitty than it already is and people will be satisfied to wait for their heavenly reward when they're dead.

Very sad.

91. Children worship Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and God.
As they get older, they stop worshiping made-up deities, one by one.

Some adults still want to believe in the Tooth Fairy, of course, as the loss of their belief is too hard for them to handle. And by Tooth Fairy, I mean Santa Claus, or whatever absurd deity they can't let go of.

28. So, let's say for argument's sake that he's right.
(I know, I know...) What he's telling people is that even if you accept Jesus Christ and follow his teachings, in his mind you are still identified as whatever you were before, and not really a Christian now?

Franklin, you'd better watch out. You won't be able to get all those people to donate their life savings to you anymore if you show your true feelings on converts vs. "pure" Christians.

93. Think of a "seed" as an embryo.
While it's easy to be confused by western minds thinking seed = sperm, an actual plant seed is more akin to a fertilized egg, an embryo.

Some traditions consider the mother's contributions greater, some consider the father's contributions greater. In Judaism, the child of a Jewish mother and a Gentile father is considered "more Jewish" than the child of a Jewish father and a Gentile mother.

106. Well, as with all Maternal/Paternal situations, it's not simple.
To look at it with a rather coarse eye, 2,000 years ago, you couldn't always tell who the father was, but it was pretty easy to determine who the mother was. Thus, maternity often rules over bloodline.... but bloodline was not the same as inheritance of power or legacy, which, in many societies, followed paternal lines, regardless of (and sometimes in spite of) bloodlines.

125. The reason why the child of a Jewish mother is Jewish is that so many Jewish
women were raped during progroms and other acts of violence and oppression against the Jews. This rule welcomed the children of those rapes into the religious community.

I love the carefully chosen words here, " it's obvious that the president renounced the prophet Mohammed and Islam and has accepted
Jesus Christ.....that's what he says he has done.....so I just have to believe the president is what he has said."

Nasty bullshit implications he casts intentionally imo.

On some level Obama's mother saw the light and dropped Mohammed and Islam because they are evil..they needed to be renounced. Yet, Obama
does have this damn seed problem, so don't forget that folks! So Obama does say he isn't Muslim, because that would be just wrong if he were,
but his saying it may or may not be true!

Franklin Graham is a sleaze.

..."I don't have proof that Rush Limbaugh has sex with young children. I can't say for sure that he takes long trips to various countries to have sex with young boys, but I don't have any proof that he doesn't either." Remember all those threads...????

I mean SOB!!!! The whole point of this statement is to stir up the teabaggers again.....there is no other reason to make a comment like this.....Franklin Graham is a political whore like his old man is/was. This is strictly character assassination by religious inference. I don't give a flying rat's ass whether Obama is Christian, Muslim, Buddhist or atheist...WHO CARES?!!!

Franklin Graham needs to shove a bible in his mouth and STFU about that which he knows NOTHING about - which appears to be quite a lot.

I wonder how much Boner and company are paying him for his comments.

36. The man has fear I guess
We are one of the world's largest muslim nations. We have all religions. Clearly the Christians are afraid. What I don't understand is what are they afraid of? This is no longer a purely Christian nation and they need to get over it already. It's the 21st Century, get with the times Franklin Graham.

Notice how, in case you don't fall for the "Islam is hereditary" meme, you can just go right to "It's the Atheism!!!" meme.

I'd really like to know if Graham used similar "well, he says he got saved; I cannot say he hasn't so I just have to trust that he has" wording when commenting on George W. Bush's personal testimony.

I was raised in a very Christian home, and I never, never liked Billy Graham. Any child could see what a phony he was. I didn't know anything about politics or religion, my instincts just made me dislike him.

Do you suppose the seed of Billy Graham is the reason Franklin Graham is such a loudmouth, attention-seeker?

Are you saying his baptism is not valid, "Reverend" Graham? If not, why?

"Born to a Christian-turned-secular mother and a Muslim-turned-atheist African father, Obama grew up living all across the world with plenty of spiritual influences, but without any particular religion. He is now a Christian, having been baptized in the early 1990s at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago."

I watched this tonight and the video simply played with Franklin Graham there

spouting his hatreds, misconceptions and lies --

OLBERMAN ... PLEASE PUT A RED LINE THRU THE VIDEO ... PUT SOME XX'S ON IT --

WHATEVER .... DON'T REPLAY IT AS IS!!

Drives me nuts!!

And Olberman Show does this like every night -- with whomever -- including Palin -- !!

Reduce the video to half the screen -- make sure that you are showing in some way

that you DISAGREE with what is being said -- and don't give the right wing any free

advertising to act out their various intolerances and obsessions!!

P L E A S E -- !!!

Otherwise, Olberman has been a great help to the left -- and hope he will continue

to be!!

101. Barack Obama, Sr. was an atheist.
At least according to Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama,_Sr. True, he had been a Muslim, but his father (president Obama's paternal grandfather) converted to Islam from Roman Catholicism, so the President could not have "inherited" Islam.

As a side note, Obama, Sr. was critical of Jomo Kenyatta's economic planning, for which he was blacklisted.
