Prominent Pakistani politician murdered outside his London home

Dr Farooq, 50, was repeatedly stabbed in the head and neck during the assault in Edgware, north London.

He was a leading member of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) party, which is one of the largest in Pakistan.


There were suggestions from Pakistan that he may have known his killer. When police arrived at the scene, they found Dr Farooq’s body outside his house.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said officers attended an address in Green Lane, Edgware, shortly before 5.30pm after reports of a serious assault. “On arrival, officers found a single Asian man aged 50 with multiple stab wounds and head injuries,” the spokesman said.

Karachi shut down after killing of Imran Farooq
No violence was reported as hundreds of MQM activists converged on Imran Farooq's family home Pakistan's largest city has come to a near standstill following the killing in London of an exiled leader of the powerful Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

Supporters of the party have gathered to mourn Imran Farooq, who was stabbed outside his home on Thursday afternoon.

A BBC correspondent in Karachi says the situation is tense but peaceful. Most shops and schools are closed.

Last month, more than 80 people were killed in clashes in the city after the killing of another MQM politician.

British police say no-one has yet been arrested over the stabbing of Mr Farooq, and it is not clear if it was politically motivated.

1. I think I read these Pakistani stories and await the sequel

In the meantime, I suggest they look for the chauffeur who may have been avenging the injustice of a lost/stolen love...or in the case of the second story, a writer revealing the myriad voices arising in the crowded mind(s) of the newly begotten "pure" children of independence.
