Gov. Perry calls on Democrats to come home
Associated Press

Gov. Rick Perry today called on Senate Democrats to end their quorum-busting walkout and return to the Capitol, his strongest plea to the absent lawmakers since they fled Texas amid a heated redistricting dispute. ---

The Democrats say they'll return to Austin if Perry drops redistricting from the special session or if Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst reinstates the so-called "two-thirds" rule allowing 11 senators in the 31-member chamber to block a vote on a bill. ---

"Our constituents know where we stand. They know where the governor has failed to lead," said Sen. Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio, chairwoman of the Senate Democratic Caucus.

In the fourth day away from their homes in Texas, the 11 senators met for breakfast Thursday around a long table littered with newspapers, notepads and coffee cups.

Taped to a wall in the Marriott conference room was a poster with a message penned in green marker: "July 31, 27 days left."

4. pmbryant calls on Gov Perry to resign
Heard Perry on the radio this morning trying to make this into some kind of populist issue. "The people" are demanding re-re-districting, supposedly. Truly embarrassing.

When did Tom Delay and Karl Rove become "the people"?

Personally when the texas representatives pulled this off in Oklahoma I was like... there ya go... don't let them bully you.. But when I found out the ringleader for the Senate Dems was Mrs. Leticia Van de Putte i was even prouder..... dad's cousins wife.... we can't just sit around and let the GOP slaughter the party and misrepresent the constituents any further!!!!! Oh yeah and didn't we redistrict just recently...... it makes me so mad!!!!

16. Welcome Melissa
And congratulations on your relative. Leticia is a great Senate leader. I see great things ahead for her. I am very proud of her and all our Democratic Senators that broke quorum. Note I'm leaving Armbrister out because he is a DINO (Democrat in name only)

8. Someone should tell Gov Perry that we're not giving the Dems back...
...until he takes George back. Maybe these Republicans should quit their ceaseless whining. "OH, YOU WON'T APPROVE EVERY DAMN STINKING ONE OF OUR MANY RIGHT WING RADICAL JUSTICES TO LEGISLATE THEIR MORALITY FROM THE BENCH. WHY WON'T YOU LET US JUST STEAMROLL YOU AND THEN CLAIM OUR ACTIONS WERE BIPARTISAN? WHY DO YOU KEEP ATTACKING THE PRESIDENT FOR BEING A STUPID LIAR?"

Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 06:14 PM by SilasSoule
On this. I've got to send her office another fax praising her leadership on this - Maybe she should consider running for 23rd congressional district against Bonilla, we could use someone like her in D.C.

The only elected official I have who is a democrat and She's is a good one!!!

This picture of the brave Texan standing across the street from the Governor's mansion in Austin is courtesy of sonias thanks sonia - I've been showing it around with lot's of laughs.

17. The Gov is an Idiot
Governor Hairpiece can go screw himself (instead of screwing the people for a change).

I support the Dems in New Mexico. As a member of "the people," it sure sounds to me like public sentiment is that we don't need redistricting - and we should be busy doing other things, like focusing on education.

Someone else pointed out that Perry didn't have a problem with the court-ordered districts when he had the chance to speak out about it last year...

25. Texas Politics
I have only posted one time before this BUT I am a native Texan and cannot keep quiet on this one. In Texas we redraw district maps every ten years- the last redrawing was in 2000. The Repubs want to change the rules now that they are in power here in Texas (but not for long) similar to what is happening in California and, I am sure, in other states, not to mention the US House and Senate. The law says every ten years- you have seven more to wait for a chance, REPUBS, so get over it. And quit your whining and trying to make us Democrats look like we are on the run. Thanks- I feel better already.

Do not keep quiet. A famous author once wrote "Silence Is the Greatest Sedition", and that is true. The more Texans who speak up, the louder our voice will become. I have a feeling many more Texans are out there lurking as well. Come on in.....The waters fine!!
BTW where in Texas ellay?

30. Welcome Ellay. 70% of Texans polled are against this obscene power grab.
Even the conservative Dallas Morning News came out with an editorial a couple of days ago opposing Gov. Delay's - er, I mean Perry's - second special session of the Texas Lege.

BTW: I'm not a native Texan. However, I am a descendant of the second president of the Republic of Texas, Mirabeau Bonaparte Lamar.
