GOP blocks Democrats' jobs outsourcing bill
Source: CNN

Senate Republicans successfully blocked a bill from coming to the Senate floor Tuesday that Democrats claim would help keep American jobs from going overseas.

Republicans call it nothing more than a pre-election political ploy.

The Democratic bill, which fell seven votes shy of passage, would have ended certain tax breaks for companies expanding overseas while giving new tax incentives to businesses bringing jobs home.

Democratic sources tell CNN they knew all along this measure would not make it very far. That was beside the point.

Stunt or no stunt, it's obvious the Republicans don't give two shits about anything other than protecting the rich and corporate profits.

14. No it's not. A few democrats
does not equal an entire political party.

26. Which is why it's good to contrast the fact that 90 percent of Democrats
vote reasonably vs 1 percent of Republicans.

24. Actually having several Democrats (sometimes considerably more than several)
repeatedly vote with Republicans- and do so with impunity (even to the point where the President campaigns for them) is does smear the entire party.

And it's part and parcel to why the Dems lose not only policy battles- but the hearts and mind of their supporters.

25. Name the Democrats
being discussed on this vote. And, name the vote where several Democrats have sided with Republicans since we've taken the Senate and House.

4. I imagine there will be DUers who assign all of the blame to the Democrats too
52/59 Democrats vote for cloture; 0/41 Republicans vote for cloture.

Now where should the large majority of our outrage be targeted now?

21. 100% of our anger should be a the Democrats and the Republicans who
blocked the bill.

Also, at Democrats who can't or won't message well enough to get America angry in enough time for them to have badgered their Republican Senators about this and won't require a real filibuster.

At both Parties, for deciding that 60% must agree before a bill can even make it to the floor and for also for deciding that changing a Senate rule requires a 2/3 vote.

8. You are showing that you do not understand the Senate
Any Senator can ask for a cloture vote before something comes to the floor or to let it go to a final bill - and cloture votes need 60 Senators.

9. Baltimore Sun: "GOP blocks effort to repeal tax breaks for job outsourcing"
http://www.baltimoresun.com/business/sns-job-outsourcing,0,1189054.story

Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic bill Tuesday to end tax deductions enjoyed by companies that close their U.S. plants and move overseas.

With a largely party-line vote of 53-45, Democrats failed to muster the 60 votes needed to clear a Republican procedural hurdle against the measure, which would also give employers a tax break to hire new U.S. workers.

Democrats vow to make the vote a campaign issue in the Nov. 2 congressional election. They contend Republicans have undermined their efforts to create jobs, a top voter concern.

FYI-the repub spin is: "The companies this bill targets, by and large, aren't opening overseas subsidiaries to make products for Americans," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said. "They're moving overseas to serve foreign markets, in addition to the markets they already have in place here, and that creates jobs here in the United States."

curiosity of a gnat and the attention span of an ADHD mouse. They will have forgotten about (if in fact they ever even heard about it to begin with) it within a day's news cycles - LOOK - OVER THERE - ISN'T THAT SARAH PALIN???

23. That was the ONLY reason for bringing up the bill.
"Democratic sources tell CNN they knew all along this measure would not make it very far. That was beside the point.

The point, Democratic strategists candidly admit, was to use the last few days of the congressional session before the election to try to highlight one of the few jobs-related issues Democrats feel they may be able to use against Republicans: outsourcing.

"No question people are angry at Democrats because the economy is bad and we are in charge," Democratic pollster Mark Mellman said.

"People are even more angry about jobs going overseas than they are about the absence of jobs as they look around their communities. So we're trying to focus that anger."

12. Voters need to hear about this.
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 01:12 PM by JDPriestly
This is about what is best for American, not what is best for one party or the other.

All who voted against this deserve to be evicted from Congress. This bill would be the biggest boost to our economy ever.

If Congress were serious about jobs, they would abolish these crazy trade agreements and change trade policy altogether.

The only other choice is to revalue our currency -- drastically revalue our currency so that our work is compensated and our products sold for prices determined by the international markets. That will make our current economic crisis look like paradise.

You can outsource to an American company located in America that hires only American workers.
