Sarah Palin Gets Restraining Order Against Alleged Stalker
Source: AP, Huffington Post

JUNEAU, Alaska — Sarah Palin has been granted a restraining order against a Pennsylvania man accused of stalking and threatening her.

Alaska Magistrate Judge Colleen Ray issued a 20-day protective order on Monday against 18-year-old Shawn R. Christy, after she found probable cause to believe he had stalked the former governor and vice presidential candidate.

Palin and her attorney claimed Christy made implied threats through phone and written messages, allegedly telling Palin to "watch her back," saying he was buying a one-way ticket to Alaska and sending a receipt for a gun purchase.

Palin testified by telephone that she feared for her life, and for her family's safety: "Bottom line is, he is crazy and could kill me," Palin said, according to the court transcript. "He wants me dead."

1. As much as I hate Palin I can't blame her in this case
Stalkers are a real threat to celebrities as we have seen in the past. Hope this jerk gets the message and stops the stalking.

17. Sorry - but your post implies it would be better for a stalker
to act?

I wish Palin would reflect on this and curb her mouth and dog whistles that might encourage a stalker of Obama or Dems.

But I would not wish anyone to be murdered.

The number of stories out there about people being severely injured by stalkers are numberous
Can't stand Palin, but that doesn't mitigate the danger

Would you have felt the same way if you lived back then? Who is to know what lies in the future?

26. No, the fail is believing bringing up Hitler is per se wrong.

It stems from a joke. It is a very convenient belief for RWers to treat as both serious and indisputably true and propagate. Not sure why a Democrat would jump on that bandwagon, though.

7. I am sure her gun nut friends here at DU would say ...
She has a gun ... she can protect herself ....

If she can kill a moose from a helicopter, then she can surely cut down a psychopath from the dais ....

Isnt that how it works in a land with perfect gun liberty ?

Live by the sword, die by the sword, and all that rot ?

(Pssst: These are just comments about the situation, and in no way condones such a horrific act as committing murder with or without a weapon - I am utterly pacifist ... Just noting the apparent hypocrisy)

...if it involved someone other than Sarah Palin---the new pin-up girl for the radical gun rights movement. If a Democratic politician was involved, the stalker's 2nd Amendment rights would be declared sacrosanct...

20. Stalkers are for real
And it sure sounds like this sicko was targeting Sarah or her family.

Sarah loves attention we all know but who can blame her for seeking a protection order from a stalker.

Do we need to go down the list of celebrities murdered/injured by stalkers?

And story breaks today that the Holocaust shooter was targeting David Axelrod. Who the hell thought he could be a target.

28. Nutters who act on things said by the likes of Palin and Angle are real, too. When was the last
Edited on Fri Oct-01-10 04:52 AM by No Elephants
time a Democratic pol implied people who disagreed with Republican pols should equate them with terrorists and/or shoot them? When was the last time a liberal minister prayed every Sunday for someone to assassinate a Democratic President?
Or to shoot anyone?

Has Sarah spoken out against stuff like that, or has she participated in it herself?

I don't advocate murder. Then again, I don't egg on my fans on with remarks about palin around with terrorists or *wink wink* "re-loading."

24. No it's a young man with a mental problem
Edited on Thu Sep-30-10 07:04 PM by RamboLiberal
that reminds me of John Hinkley. Those of you who pooh-pooh this as Palin trying to get attention or overreacting ought to read this thread. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4559855

Father Craig Christy said the matter began when Shawn, without his parents' knowledge, left home, boarded a Greyhound bus and headed to Washington, D.C., in November 2008.

Mr. Christy ran out of money and had nowhere to go but said he felt safe around the White House and decided to hang out there, his father said. Eventually, he drew the attention of the Secret Service and was questioned by agents but not arrested.

That December, Mr. Christy said his cell phone started clicking and making strange noises. Also, when he used a public computer at a library in Tamaqua, it started malfunctioning. He said he began to call the Secret Service to see if the agency had somehow altered his phone and the computer

Mr. Christy said he admitted making threats to Mr. McCain, Mrs. Palin and President Barack Obama.

23. This kid needs some mental help
In an interview Wednesday night at his McAdoo home, Mr. Christy said he tried to contact former presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John McCain and Mrs. Palin, his running mate, because he believed the U.S. Secret Service had tampered with his cell phone.

Mr. Christy said he began making threats to get their attention and have his phone fixed.

"It wasn't the brightest idea," Mr. Christy acknowledged.

-----

Mr. Christy said he admitted making threats to Mr. McCain, Mrs. Palin and President Barack Obama. He also admitted to trying to contact Mrs. Palin through Ms. Cole, Mrs. Palin's family, her attorney and the Alaska governor's office. He said he found the numbers by looking them up in online phone directories. Shawn also said he called Mrs. Palin's office in 2008 because he was a supporter and wanted to know more about her views. When explaining how he contacted Ms. Cole from a phone with an Alaska area code, Mr. Christy said he purchased a pay-by-the-minute phone for which he could select the number and area code. He said he called Mrs. Palin's mother from the same number in an effort to reach the politician.

Rather, he sent the receipt from when he sold the gun
to a gun shop in Tamaqua in April to let Mrs. Palin know
that he wasn't going to shoot her."
