GOP hopes for breakthroughs in Northeast
Source: AP

BOSTON – Three weeks from midterm elections, Republicans speaking up for fiscal conservatism are making strong runs at governorships across the Northeast, where some of the nation's bluest states went big for President Barack Obama two years ago.

Democratic incumbents face tough fights in Massachusetts and New Hampshire against Republican challengers, and the GOP is making aggressive bids for open seats in Vermont, Maine and Connecticut.

Democrats say they'll prevail in a region where voters eager for solutions to economic woes will be turned off by the surge of tea party activists and extremists driving the GOP rightward. In states dependent on tourism for jobs, they've cast Republicans as too cozy with developers and polluters.

But Republicans are echoing tea party themes of fiscal responsibility, seeking to tap voter discontent over jobs, the sour economy and government spending. GOP gains in the region on Nov. 2 could bolster Republicans nationally, giving the party a stronger hand in congressional redistricting.

2. No chance in hell for my vote in the Northeast.
I was laid off three weeks ago. In my mid-fifties. No equivalent employment or less ready to go. And republicans wanting to remove my unemployment benefits.

Between the likes of Paladino, DioGuardi, Russell (Congress, District 18), and my local State Senate race featuring Bob Cohen (slumlord), the GOP has a snowball's chance in hell of making gains. A bumper crop of real stinkeroos here.

9. Two seats -- that's all they'll gain in the House out of New England.
And that's tops. Zip in the Senate.

Governors always get shot in recessions -- I don't read much into that.

10. The GOP/teabagger candidate for governor in Maine is a thug, a liar and a tax cheat
Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 09:31 AM by jpak
Who wants to be on the front page of the newspapers telling Obama to "go to hell" and drill for oil in the Gulf o Maine.

Stay-at-home progressives will get what they deserve if he wins.

11. Texas "yee haw" doesn't sell in Yankee America
Who was it who had that expression about "the Republicans wanted to saw off New England from the United States"? Well, they did it, electorally.

12. Mass will not be a slam dunk for either side.
In Mass, an ad for Gov. Patrick tells how his challenger (Baker) raised health insurance prices and signed a pledge to support policies that encourage sending jobs overseas. Sadly, that ad has not run enough and his challenger's camp started running ads long before Patrick's camp ran any ads.

Also, Mass. has a history of liking WASPy Republican Governors, maybe bc the state legislature has been almost 100% Democratic for a very long time. And Patrick made some all too well-publicized errors early on and raised taxes a number of times--the latter mostly bc Romney and others had left the state in bad shape.

And, while nowhere near as bad a candidate as Coakley, Patrick has not been a dynamic or charismatic candidate this time around. In 2006, he had Axelrod, so we heard a lot of Obama's 2007-2008 rhetoric before the rest of the nation. But this time, Patrick is not the inspiring candidate he seemed in 2006. Plus, a former Dem is splitting the vote, even as his running mate and other supporters are defecting to Baker. Also, recent federal prosecutions of state Democrats won't help. Finally, the base remains dispirited.

On the other hand, the new pro-Patrick ads do, IMO, hit the mark and Mass is a blue state where Dems may have been shocked into action by the Brown turd's victory.

IOW, it ain't ovah until it's ovah.

13. Well in PA the less experienced candidate might win just because my state seems to switch parties
Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 12:00 PM by wisteria
for our governor every eight years. So, Corbett the ass, might win simply because Rendell has served for eight years and is a Democrat. Corbett will be a bad governor and I am sure he will cut and slash everything he can that will benefit the needy and the unemployed, just so that it looks as though he is on the side of the "working guy" and because they are the most vulnerable and defenseless. But, he will also make sure that big business gets most of what they want for the least amount of cost to them. Onorato is such a better candidate and has the experience needed to run the government, but the ignorance in PA-especially in my area is so wide spread that you can't get past it. I still have hope though that the two largest areas-Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, will pull out a win for Onorato.

15. When all their people in MA lose the Republicans will realize the Brown win was a fluke
and nothing else. Massachusetts is a proud blue state and we don't take kindly to teabaggers here.
