Super typhoon slams Philippines at 155 mph
Source: MSNBC

MANILA, Philippines — A major cyclone made landfall in the country's north on Monday, killing at least three people, leaving a wasteland of fallen trees and power poles, and sending thousands fleeing to safety in near-zero visibility.

A retired general said bracing for the onslaught was like preparing for war.

Tropical Storm Risk said Megi, known locally as Juan, was a Category 5 super typhoon, the highest rating, with winds of more than 155 mph when it hit mountains in northeast Luzon overnight Sunday.

Megi was the most powerful typhoon to hit the Philippines in four years, government forecasters said. A 2006 howler with 155-mph winds set off mudslides that buried entire villages, killing about 1,000 people.

1. I think they have taken two Cat 5s...
With less casualties than a single US city during Katrina...

6. boilerplate BS
Maybe they didn't engage in wetlands destruction that put one of their great cities at risk.

But I suppose instead of paying attention to the real facts about Katrina, it's better to just throw the entire city under the bus.

5. And then there was Tropical Storm Thelma
"Tropical Storm Thelma (international designation: 9125, JTWC designation: 27W, Philippine name: Uring) was the deadliest tropical storm of the 1991 Pacific typhoon season, killing more than 6,000 people as it crossed the Philippines."

8. No coincidence
That's not an uncommon strength for a typhoon or hurricane. They're rare, but they happen.
