Boehner doesn't agree to House paycuts
Published: Nov. 5, 2010 at 5:48 PM

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Taxpayer groups are urging future speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to lead by example and cut House salaries as a symbolic gesture of cutting spending.

To groups expecting Republicans who ran on the smaller-government-by-cutting-spending program it's a kind of "put up or shut up" prospect.

"There has to be a visible gesture that people can immediately relate to," said Pete Sepp, the executive vice president of the conservative National Taxpayers Union.

"And cutting pay would be one of the best symbols, because unlike virtually anything else the federal government does, when Congress spends money on its own salaries and benefits, people can make a direct comparison to their own situation," Sepp said.

37. Not really, but I agree that it sort of leaves the reader with the impression that
Boehner is against the pay cuts. It actually says that they haven't decided on it yet, which technically means they haven't agreed to them yet (nor have they disagreed).

30. I have a better "symbolic gesture"
Cut about $50 billion out of the defense budget. Right now.

You know they are going to do all their cuts in things Democrats like (such as environmental spending and social spending), so cutting $50 billion out of the defense budget--which would NOT reduce the level of military readiness, as the Repukes suggest--would definitely be change we could believe in.

Even if they halved the Congresspersons' pay, it wouldn't be a significant pay cut. There aren't that many of them and, at less than $200,000 per congresscritter, they're not as expensive as, say, trying to shoot down drone missiles with lasers and failing.

Now for a real cut: stop spending money on National MIssile Defense. It would be cheaper just to go to every country that has nukes and buy them outright.

33. Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard had a way to deal with this.
Whenever a constituent or journalist asked him why he wasn\'t fulfilling an election promise, he would say that there were \'core\' promises and \'non-core\' promises. This was obviously a non-core promise.

43. Who cares what they make??
Really, does it FUCKING MATTER?

It's like "tackling" health-care reform by focusing on tort reform.

Do you want to make sure that only the wealthy can ever run for office?

If you cut salaries by 5% then people will just say cut them by 10%, until you make the politicians PAY to stay in office.

You know who'd do that? Carly Fiorina. Meg Whitman.

I can't believe we have a STUPID constitutional amendment about pay congressional raises but not the No ERA. The 27th amendment should have been the ERA.

Focus on REAL issues and leave shit like this to the tea-party morons and the Heritage Foundation.
