California man pleads not guilty to bomb-making
Source: AP

VISTA, Calif. --
An unemployed software consultant pleaded not guilty to running a bomb factory at his home, where prosecutors said they found the largest amount of certain homemade explosives in one location in U.S. history.

The San Diego Union-Tribune and North County Times reported that George Djura Jakubec, 54, entered pleas Monday in San Diego County Superior Court to 28 charges, mostly involving possession or manufacture of explosives. Jakubec also was charged with robbing two banks.

It was unclear what Jakubec intended to do with the explosives and weapons, Deputy District Attorney Terri Perez said.

The explosives were discovered last week when a gardener was injured in a blast that occurred when he stepped on explosive powder in the backyard. Mario Garcia, 49, suffered eye, chest and arm injuries and was recovering.

ah yes, this is the threat that is real...

By the way... according to local newsies this was in Escondido, near I-15... a lovely area where we have a few White Supremacist groups.

This is what some of us mean when we say INTERNAL threads...

Not that anybody will charge this man, who might be actually clinically insane, who knows... of terrorism.

By the way... the undie bomber used PETN... which was ONE of the explosives this guy was ahem... making...

I wonder at times what will it take to realize we do have a militia problem... not saying this guy was... just making a damn educated guess.

2. I wonder what the basis for his defense will be?
Seems like he should be working on a plea bargain. Maybe he is.

5. The wife sounds complicit. They were both arrested
for shoplifting from Fry's Electronics.

I wonder what they took -- perhaps wires and stuff to make detonators?

She said his hobby was chemistry but when asked what she thought he was making, she said "I don't know."

Either she's the most clueless person on the planet, or she was in on this.

Note: I found out today that he also used to sign some documents using his middle name as first name: Djura Jakobec.

6. And I hate to mention this
but first and last name... I am almost betting central European with certain bomb making training. No, you do not go around making PETN with what is under your sink!

4. Nadin, we ran this story on him yesterday:
http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/node/4852

Today I went to Ramona and tracked down a former neighbor. Said he was "weird" even 20 years ago. Back then he lived with his parents, who were recent immigrants from Serbia.

No clue yet whether he's a lone nut, a White Supremacist (I wondered about that too, lots of them in the areas he lived), a Muslim extremist (there are some in Serbia), some other group, even making bombs for Mexican drug cartels, since he made frequent trips south of the border. Or maybe some combination of the above.

He was a building contractor from '88 to '92. I wonder what else he built besides bombs and his parents' house?

The other big question is what was he targeted to blow up!

7. Serbia you said
he learned his trade in the Army... I am betting...

As to who he was making bombs for... I am sure that will be part of the investigation... lemme see, not that I could connect him to it, but he was making grenades and in the recent past fragmentation grenades have been used in Mexico...

As I said above PETN is not something you can make from what is under your sink...

hmm

And the Serbs were involved in a little ahem ethnic cleansing of ahem Muslims...

8. God points, all makes sense.
By the way contractors are allowed to own certain explosives if they do blasting for foundations, pools etc. so possible he learned some of these skills when he was doing contracting. Though plastic explosives aren't part of that mix....
