Obama uses Thanksgiving radio address to call for bipartisanship
Source: Washington Post

In yet another acknowledgment of Democrats' recent drubbing and the tectonic political shift in Washington, President Obama used much of his Thanksgiving morning radio address to call for bipartisanship in tackling the country's persistent economic ails.

Just a day after expressing relief that he had prevented another November "shellacking" by sending two pardoned turkeys to live out their days at the Mount Vernon home of George Washington, the nation's 44th president argued that neither party could achieve meaningful economic change on its own.

Citing the urgency to "accelerate this recovery," Obama declared: "But we won't do it as one political party. We've got to do it as one people. And, in the coming weeks and months, I hope we can work together, Democrats and Republicans and independents alike, to make progress on these and other issues."

The president told his listeners about a scheduled White House meeting next week with congressional leaders from both parties, a get-together already delayed once, and one intended, he said, to yield "a real and honest discussion." Thorny discussions await on matters including whether to permit Bush-era tax cuts to expire for the wealthy and consideration of the START nuclear treaty. In a reference to the challenges of navigating the divide, Obama said, "I believe that if we stop talking at one another, and start talking with one another, we can get a lot done." . . .

Let me be the first of the season: Bipartisanship: Bah, Humbug!

35. Some Democrats are always trying to convince the Republicans that there is no difference between us
and them.

Inevitably, they are always half successful. Those Democrats are convinced, but the Republicans are not.

Once two Democrats were in a house. A bunch of Republicans started banging on the door. "Let us into the house!" they shouted. The two Democrats, not wanting damage to the door, the house and the neighborhood, let them in. Immediately, the Republicans took the two Democrats out to be shot. At the last possible moment one of the Democrats finally protested feebly, "The blindfold is too tight!" The other Democrat whispered frantically, "Quiet! The Republicans might think we're not bipartisan!"

But obviously, we're not doing enough for the Republicans. We need to help them even more. We need to help them put on the blindfold and help them tighten it. If we do enough for them, they'll really turn over a new leaf....

102. I agree. I think the President would have been better off, and us too,
if had said nothing. Wasn't it last week when the repubs invited to the WH couldn't free up their schedules to attend thus effectively snubbing him? Bi-partisanship doesn't work becuase it doesn't exist.

When we had a government that "governed least," blacks couldn't vote, people worked till they dropped for no benefits, the food was unsafe and the population was illiterate.

126. I have never heard of Thomas Paine being referred to as right winger before.
Actually, it was the government that prevented blacks from voting. Furthermore, it was the unions that furthered the causes of workers, not the government. And if anything, the FDA has made our food less safe and more expensive.

129. Right. And it was "government" that ended the practice..
..as an extension of the will of the citizens, against, oddly enough, state governments that still wanted to keep segregation. As unions go, it was government action that guaranteed the rights of citizens to collective bargaining that made the union movement possible. The idea that food and water was "safe" and regulated before the FDA is laughable. Stop with your right-wing talking points - they're not fooling anyone. You're also grossly misquoting Paine.

Edited on Thu Nov-25-10 05:30 PM by liberation
... or at least that is what I have been told by our friendly DLC reps.

One thing though, they never define where exactly is where he "wants them" and just like in general relativity, the frame of reference makes a biiiiig deal of difference. Because it could very well be that it means that the GOP is stationary and Obama is the one moving towards them, which would still qualify as "having them where he wants them..."

Oh, well. Gotta check on the turkey, I have a feeling that it is done... just like many other things by now.

22. I wish that Obama's plea would be met with agreement from the other
side, based on recent history, I know it won't.

I hope Obama has a plan B to make the Republicans miserable if they don't cooperate.

Actually, maybe Obama should ally with the TeaBagger Republicans on issues like earmarks. If the establishment GOP see Obama as politically astute enough to get some TeaBaggers on his side, then they will listen up.

Obama should invite all the first year Democratic members of Congress to the White House for an exchange of ideas.

Then he should invite all the first year Republican members of Congress to the White House to get their ideas.

He should try to glean the best of the newcomers' ideas and work them into some of his policies. The Republican Party old guard needs to go. Some of the TeaBaggers' ideas are reprehensible, but there are bound to be a few acceptable ones. Obama should be very good at this. This might be the approach he could take to make some friends among the newbies in Congress who are not yet entrenched in the non-bipartisanship quite so much.

I realize that the TeaBaggers came into office on agendas that vilify Obama personally and that some of them are downright stupid and others insane, but there may be a couple who could be worked with. If Obama can find them and give them a boost, he might actually be able to penetrate the Gingrich Republicans who are just there to block progress.

We still hold the Senate, and we still hold the Executive Branch. We tried bipartisanship for the last two years and all we got were obstruction, filibusters, and argumentum ad hominem from the right wing.

It is time to put a boot heel to the throat of the conservatives and use our existing powers to defeat them.

40. Why the hell would I want
bipartisanship? I am opposed to everything Republicans stand for. They are morally and intellectually bankrupt. Every time he decides to be bipartisan it means we are compromising our position and accepting theirs. Should we negotiate with them? If necessary. That is it. But it is negotiation, and that implies opposition. The mere fact that he wants bipartisanship means that he thinks those numbnuts actually have some good ideas. They don't. They have proven that.

The votes? He isn't going to get them. He could give them everything they want and they would still vote against him. He would have to promise to dismantle Social Security, eliminate Medicare, provide everyone over 250,000 a 0 rate in taxes, and then kick in his own impeachment. Then the Republicans would find just enough "moderate Republicans" to get it passed, and then target those "moderate Republicans" and replace them with the nuttiest of the right wing-nuts in the next election.

Quick anecdote: I was going through couple counseling. Things were not going well, to say the least. Our couple counselor tried a tactic. He had us stand on either side of the room and then meet half way. Well, I met half way, my wife came out a quarter. He said try it again from where you are. I went half way, she stepped back and so on. After doing this technique three or four times - always with the same result - , the therapist looked at me and asked "what have you learned from this." I said, "I need to learn to compromise." The therapist said "if you think any compromise is possible, I think you need a new couple counselor." From that point on, we started working on divorce.
I think Obama needs to talk to my former couple counselor. He is as co-dependent on the Republicans as I was on my ex.

And for some reason, I still think he can get it together and be really great. I think both of us need our heads examined. Sorry for the rant.

127. and that's it!
All that bi-partisanship, wheeling and dealing, gave us the health insurance industry bill. More pro-business, than pro-people bill that the party of "no" still wouldn't go for, even when it was their bill.

These self-interest, selfish, Ayn "crazy" Randians are not for saving Americans. Yeah, just like clinton, we can have some poor Little Boot's deregulating bullshite that got us into the mess in the first place.

I said in one thread months ago, if the repukes get a majority, then they don't have to make excuses for going further pro-rich, pro-deregulating.

And to the man who was quoting Paine about "least government." There is a difference of "least government" on individual rights, than, "least" government that protects the people from actual predators. And, regulation, (if you have actually read some history) was put there because we were not protected from those who's main goal is to make a buck, no matter how much misery they create. I'll take higher priced food over my family being poisoned by tainted food. And, I'd feel much better if my family members had a safe work environment than seeing them killed so that wall street could make extra profit. The reason for the numerous recalls is because Little Boots cut most regulatory departments, since he believed his nice, friendly, sociopathic greedy friends could police themselves.

I'd say the global, new world order, corporate asshats are gaining the upper hand on people all over the world.

51. Dear President Obama. Enough already with the pleas for
bipartisanship. The GOP would rather put a stake through your heart. How much more are you going to tolerate before accepting the fact that they're just not that into you. They want you to FAIL in a very large way, and to that end they will do everything in their power to make sure NOTHING gets done, and to make you look BAD.

59. It was a wonderful address.
Video: Weekly Address: Giving Thanks for Those Who Serve

Weekly Address: President Obama Delivers Thanksgiving Greeting

WASHINGTON – During this holiday season, President Obama used his weekly address to give thanks for the blessings of America, in particular that distinctly American impulse to give something of ourselves and do what is required to make tomorrow better than today. With that sense of determination and sacrifice, America has built a powerful economy, stood against tyranny, fought for equality, and connected the globe with our own science and imagination. And by working together as one people – as Americans -- we can overcome the challenges currently facing our nation.

Today, like millions of other families across America, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will sit down to share a Thanksgiving filled with family and friends – and a few helpings of food and football, too. And just as folks have done in every Thanksgiving since the first, we’ll spend some time taking stock of what we’re thankful for: the God-given bounty of America, and the blessings of one another.

This is also a holiday that captures that distinctly American impulse to give something of ourselves. Even as we speak, there are countless Americans serving at soup kitchens and food pantries; contributing to their communities; and standing guard around the world.

And in a larger sense, that’s emblematic of what Americans have always done. We come together and do what’s required to make tomorrow better than today. That’s who we are.

Consider our journey since that first Thanksgiving. We are among the world’s youngest of peoples, but time and again, we have boldly and resiliently led the way forward. Against tough odds, we are a people who endure – who explored and settled a vast and untamed continent; who built a powerful economy and stood against tyranny in all its forms; who marched and fought for equality, and connected a globe with our own science and imagination.

None of that progress was predestined. None of it came easily. Instead, the blessings for which we give thanks today are the product of choices made by our parents, and grandparents, and generations before – whose determination and sacrifice ensured a better future for us.

This holiday season, we must resolve once more to do the same.

This is not the hardest Thanksgiving America has ever faced. But as long as many members of our American family are hurting, we’ve got to look out for one another. As long as many of our sons and daughters and husbands and wives are at war, we’ve got to support their mission and honor their service. And as long as many of our friends and neighbors are looking for work, we’ve got to do everything we can to accelerate this recovery and keep our economy moving forward.

And we will. But we won’t do it as any one political party. We’ve got to do it as one people. And in the coming weeks and months, I hope that we can work together, Democrats and Republicans and Independents alike, to make progress on these and other issues.

That’s why, next week, I’ve invited the leadership of both parties to the White House for a real and honest discussion – because I believe that if we stop talking at one another, and start talking with one another, we can get a lot done.

For what we are called to do again today isn’t about Democrats or Republicans. It’s not about left or right. It’s about us. It’s about what we know this country is capable of. It’s about what we want America to be in this new century.

A vibrant nation that makes sure its children are the best-educated in the world. A healthy, growing economy that runs on clean energy and creates the jobs of tomorrow. A responsible government that reduces its deficits. An America where every citizen is able to go as far as he or she desires.

We can do all this, because we’ve done it before. We’re made of the same sturdy stuff as the travelers who sat down to the first Thanksgiving, and all who came after – who worked, and sacrificed, and invested, because they believed that their efforts would make the difference for us.

That’s who we are. We shape our own destiny with conviction, compassion, and clear and common purpose. We honor our past and press forward with the knowledge that tomorrow will be better than today. We are Americans. That’s the vision we won’t lose sight of. That’s the legacy that falls to our generation. That’s the challenge that together, we are going to meet.

To every American, I am thankful for the privilege of being your President. To all our service members stationed around the world, I am honored to be your Commander-in-Chief. And from the Obama family to yours, have a very Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you.

The MSM will use every issue to try to drive people crazy. It might just work.

but in this case he is wrong. Bipartisanship is not possible with the Republicans. In theory, bipartisanship is fine. But we have got to realize what the GOP of today has become. There in no working with these people. All they want to do is obstruct and keep Obama from accomplishing anything.

89. This is very dangerous and here is why...
The Repukes with their corporate and media enablers have been using the past 2 years to paint Obama as a far left radical liberal, who is implementing programs that they have now used their vast networks to spew misinformation.

Their meme is that Obama's agenda hurts the economy and has created more of mess then he had inherited in the following ways: Obama's agenda damages capitalism, bails out unions and union pension funds, creates vast amounts of unsustainable high paying government jobs, supports green energy at the expense of real American jobs, supports community organizations that use govt funding to advance partisan goals, implements federal govt takeovers of many parts of the economy including Health Care, Energy, Education, transportation, et al.

Now Obama, who in reality was a centrist at best, moves further right, and gives credibility to their ridiculous assertions about his agenda. As those on the left fight to be heard the rhythmic drumbeat of the conservatives push will be drowning us all out. As the economy begins to recover they will claim it is their policies and their agenda that made it happen.......

Obama, dude - get a clue.
as the story goes - even your hero, Jesus, took a whip to the money lenders in the Temple; not a bag of bailout cash.
and he didn't kiss Satan's feet on the mountain; or, ask for a dialog; he told the horned goatman, to get the fuck out of his face.
the moral of the story being: you can't have deals, or discussions, with greedy, sociopathic, reptiles.
