Haiti cholera: UN peacekeepers to blame, report says
Source: BBC

UN peacekeepers were the most likely source of the cholera epidemic sweeping Haiti, according to a leaked report by a French disease expert.

Epidemiologist Renaud Piarroux conducted research in Haiti on behalf of the French and Haitian governments.

Sources who have seen his report say it found strong evidence that the cholera outbreak was caused by contamination of a river by UN troops from Nepal.

The UN said it had neither accepted nor dismissed the findings.

3. Theirs wasn't a novel idea.
It was reported as likely due be from a Nepalese peacekeeper before the riots.

Still doesn't mean that the riots were justified. Lots of people died from cholera. Yet there's no hint that anybody knew that a cholera carrier was among the Nepalese, or that sanitation at the UN peacekeeper's camp was any shoddier than the norm.

7. you're right -
violence should never be justified. But that is the reasoning the riots gave for their actions. Whether it's true or not - I couldn't say.

5. Early on the strain was id'ed as being from Asia.
Early on I saw a report from two youngsters who id'ed the broken sewage pipes at the U.N. camp. The story was thereafter spun as ig'nant Haitians.

4. It has absolutely nothing to do with the lack of a medical or sanitation infrastructure.

6. It has to do with a U.N. camp filled with Nepalese carriers
whose sanitation was HIGHLY SLOPPY and who added their "gift" to to the mix.

Auf deutsch "gift" bedeutet POISON.
