US scientists create mice from two fathers

(AFP) – 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON — US scientists have used stem cell technology to create mice from two fathers, an advance that they say could help preserve endangered species and even help same-sex couples have their own genetic children one day.

According to the study published Wednesday in the journal Biology of Reproduction, reproductive scientists in Texas were able to manipulate cells from a male (XY) mouse fetus to produce an induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell line.

These iPS cells are adult cells that have undergone some genetic reprogramming in order to enter an embryonic stem cell-like state.

Some of the cells that were grown from this new line spontaneously lost their Y chromosome, turning them into XO cells.

6. I am curious as to your statement
This would seem to me to be the opposite of the patriarchal ideal. It would seem to complicate leadership if both parents are the patriarch. Plus 2 fathers kinda complicates the whole tracking lineage via the father part of things.

24. Haven't read the article thoroughly enough ...
Edited on Thu Dec-09-10 03:08 PM by defendandprotect
but my original humorous reaction to it is the effort by patriarchy to

find themselves a womb --

Without reading the article, there is also the question of what the future of

these all male creations may be --

I recall a long while back that they were working to find the "trigger" which

moves the female model which is the way life begins to create a male.

They did find it and succeeded at "triggering" a male -- however, the males

couldn't reproduce.

It's all part of the same old story -- the patriarchal war on women and nature --

Well covered by Mary Shelley in "Frankenstein" -- and even better covered by

Mel Brooks in his "Franenstein" --

The first question that this "research" raises for me is ... what the hell?

How about finding a way to implant tooth buds to create new teeth rather than

the implants being used now --

Any who had five minutes to spend thinking about this could I'm sure think of a

few dozen more worthy efforts for research!

Is this really the way our tax dollars should be spent?

2. Interesting. I just finished reading "The Cure"
and it definetely discusses iPS cell line, but only in terms of espionage and investment.

3. Interesting that the process produces females.
Two Woman can have a daughter. Two men can have a daughter.

Adding same-sex Daughters to the genetic 50%/50% probability of gender in heterosexual children, one thing is clear: In about 100 years it is going to be raining chicks.

10. Reproductive scientists create mice from 2 fathers
Source: Medical Daily

Using stem cell technology, reproductive scientists in Texas, led by Dr. Richard R. Berhringer at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, have produced male and female mice from two fathers.

The study was posted today (Wednesday, December 8) at the online site of the journal Biology of Reproduction.

The achievement of two-father offspring in a species of mammal could be a step toward preserving endangered species, improving livestock breeds, and advancing human assisted reproductive technology (ART). It also opens the provocative possibility of same-sex couples having their own genetic children, the researchers note.

In the work reported today, the Behringer team manipulated fibroblasts from a male (XY) mouse fetus to produce an induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell line. About one percent of iPS cell colonies grown from this XY cell line spontaneously lost the Y chromosome, resulting in XO cells. The XO iPS cells were injected into blastocysts from donor female mice. The treated blastocysts were transplanted into surrogate mothers, which gave birth to female XO/XX chimeras having one X chromosome from the original male mouse fibroblast.

13. I'm sorry... I read that headline three times as:
"Republican scientists create mice from 2 fathers"

It kind of put me into oxymoron overload, or something.

I'm going to have to go lay down for a bit...

17. The headline is still kind of a misnomer
They still needed the female mouse to carry the babies. I want to see scientists create the ability for men to CARRY children. Now, that would be fun.
