triblocalA growing chorus of New Trier High School alumni is demanding their alma mater reconsider giving an achievement award to former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
Rumsfeld, who graduated from New Trier in 1950, was one of 10 “outstanding alumni” selected for the school’s inaugural Alumni Achievement Awards and Hall of Honor, to be given March 22.
Within three days of the Dec. 1 announcement, 80 e-mails were sent to administrators regarding the awards – 52 of them were critical of the Rumsfeld selection, according to records obtained by the Tribune under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Three were in support.
Several of the people e-mailing the district said they were “shocked” or “disgusted” by Rumsfeld’s selection, referring to him as a “war criminal.” Many pleaded with the school to rescind the award to Rumsfeld.
“Let the military, political, or business worlds venerate Rumsfeld, if they must. But New Trier owes him no such honor. This is a hugely pathetic statement that does the school and its alumni no credit whatsoever,” wrote Michelle Komie, a 1993 New Trier graduate, in an e-mail to the school.
