Mugabe threat to nationalize US and UK Zimbabwe firms
Source: BBC

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe says his country will nationalize all US and UK companies operating in the country unless Western sanctions are removed.

He told his Zanu-PF party's annual conference it was time to fight the sanctions imposed on him and party leaders. Mr Mugabe also said it was time to end power-sharing with the party of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

=snip=

"Why should we continue to have 400 British companies operating here freely?" Mr Mugabe said.

"Why should we continue having companies and organisations that are supported by Britain and America without hitting back? Time has come for us to (take) revenge."

2. Seens reasonable actually.
But not a move that he has the right leverage to make without more bad coming from it than good. It is too bad he broke from his own strategic doctrine almost 20 years ago.

3. Unfortunately for the country,
there's probably nobody there capable of running them. There's no point unless he has trained people ready to take over.

It will be like the farms seized from whites and given to natives who had no idea what to do with them. So instead of being "the bread basket of Africa", Zimbabwe now has little food even for its own people, and no prospect of improvement.

I don't think Mugabe fools anybody but himself any longer.

8. My question is
Let's say the companies decide to cut their losses, disable the machinery, remove everything that they can and leave the country? What would happen to the people? I wouldn't blame the companies for doing this. Mugabe needs to work with the people that are able to do the work there. Otherwise the work just isn't going to get done.
In short, I see this kind of thing backfiring for Mugabe. Which makes me happy.

4. He'll manage those companies as well as he has managed Zimbabwe.
In other words, they'll be bankrupt very soon.

5. Africa for the Africans
After hundreds of years, haven't the Europeans and Americans stolen enough of Africa's natural resources? Whenever a person of colour ask for a fair exchange for their services and resources the western media come to the aide of the western criminals.

6. Ahhhh, the race card. Because Mugabe is black he gets a free pass?
Which "western criminals" in Zimbabwe are you talking about?

BTW If you read the entire article you'd see that this is an attempt at populism, & deflecting criticism onto foreigners whilst gearing up for another fixed election.

7. I agree, why not let Mugabe take possession of ALL property
and see what people's paradise he leads ZBW to. We seem to be heading there anyway. I realize it is bad to feed trolls, but the willingness of anyone to describe the number-one basket case on this planet today, especially compared to any time before his govt. took over, as anything other than a abyss of incompetent corruption, bureaucratic ignorance, and bad-outcome central planning, does astound me.

You do understand the goods and services he might propose to exchange must actually exist and be delivered as described? When you dont' deliver what you promise to, it is unwise to expect complete or prompt payment.

He can get raw material/mining deals. How about his new farming capacity? He should be able to substantially exceed the white folk farming output he has evicted. Do you have current numbers? THis should be a viable export area for them.

Did I see a 1 trillion zimbabwe note before the recent re-issuing of the currency?
