1. It's been confirmed
Late Update: U.S. District Judge John Roll was killed, WNBC reporter Jonathan Dienst confirmed.

Roll faced death threats in 2009 after presiding over a $32 million civil-rights lawsuit, the Arizona Republic reported:

When Roll ruled the case could go forward, Gonzales said talk-radio shows cranked up the controversy and spurred audiences into making threats.
In one afternoon, Roll logged more than 200 phone calls. Callers threatened the judge and his family. They posted personal information about Roll online.

"They said, 'We should kill him. He should be dead,' " Gonzales said.

4. As tragic as it is, this will carry some real weight.
When Federal Judges start circling the wagons, some shit will go down. Their influence trickles right down the line. We will start seeing max sentences for these stalkers and these fuckheads making threats.

3. This judge was also the target of death threats from conservatives and anti-immigration supporters..
n February, when U.S. District Judge John Roll presided over a $32 million civil-rights lawsuit filed by illegal immigrants against an Arizona rancher, the Marshals Service was anticipating the fallout.

Roll, who is the chief federal judge in Arizona, said both he and his wife were given a protection detail for about a month.

11. How crazy! Judge Roll was recommended by Senator McCain.
On the recommendation of Arizona U.S. Senator John McCain, Roll was nominated by President George Bush on September 23, 1991 to a seat vacated by Alfred Marquez as Marquez assumed senior status. Roll was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 22, 1991 on unanimous consent of the Senate and received commission on November 25, 1991<2>. Roll served as the chief judge of the District of Arizona since 2006. Judicial service terminated on January 8, 2011, due to death.

I hope that this wakes up a few sleeping Republicans to the tremendous problem that their party has.

13. I remember when Judge John Wood was killed in San Antonio.
Coming out of his condo in the morning in Alamo Heights.

He was killed by Woody Harrelson's dad, Charles. I was in college in S.A. at the time.

Judge killed presided over controversial immigration case

By JOSH GERSTEIN

A federal judge deeply involved in the contentious fight in Arizona over illegal immigration was among those killed Saturday when a gunman opened fired in a Tucson supermarket parking lot where Rep. Gabriel Giffords (D-Ariz.) was meeting with constituents.

The death of U.S. District Court Judge John Roll was publicly confirmed by President Barack Obama as he appeared briefly before reporters to discuss the tragedy. Roll “served America’s legal system for nearly 40 years,” the president noted as he expressed his condolences to the families of those killed and offered his prayers for those wounded in the attack.

In 2009, Roll was placed under full-time U.S. Marshals Service protection because of a flood of calls and a handful of threats he received after a case he was handling that pitted illegal immigrants and a local rancher received attention on talk radio.

Roll issued an initial ruling for the migrants, which riled many on the right. The special security, which Roll told the Arizona Republic he found “unnerving and invasive,” was discontinued after a month when four particular threat-makers were identified.

17. Maybe the assassin's target was Judge Roll and it was Representative Giffords who was the bystander
Hard to tell what was going through the Teabagger's mind when he pulled the trigger.
