LONDON, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Britain's prime minister raised the suspicion that Egyptian authorities may be behind attacks on anti-government protesters as opponents and supporters of President Hosni Mubarak clashed in Cairo on Wednesday.
Prime Minister David Cameron's comments, condemning the violence, were his strongest so far on the crisis which has seen an unprecedented nine days of mass protest calling for the end of Mubarak's 30-year rule.
"If it turns out that the regime in any way has been sponsoring or tolerating this violence, that would be completely and utterly unacceptable. These are despicable scenes that we're seeing," Cameron said after meeting U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in London.
Ban urged restraint on all sides, and called for a "peaceful transition" in Egypt. He warned of turmoil spreading. "Any attack against peaceful demonstrators is unacceptable and I strongly condemn it," Ban said, urging dialogue. "We should not underestimate the danger of instability across the Middle East,"
