Calls for weekend protests in Syria
Source: Al Jazeera English

Social media used in bid to mobilise Syrians for rallies demanding freedom, human rights and the end to emergency law.

Pages on Facebook have been urging Syrians to stage anti-government demonstrations after Friday prayers

Calls for protests in Syria are spreading on social media websites, following popular uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt.

Organisers say protests will be staged in front of the parliament in the capital, Damascus, on Friday and Saturday, and at Syrian embassies across the world.

Several pages have been set up on Facebook, with the most popular one, named "http://www.facebook.com/Syrian.Revolution?ref=ts">The Syrian Revolution", "liked" by about 13,000 people by Thursday.

However, many of those writing comments on Facebook appeared to be Syrians living abroad calling on their "brothers" at home to protest.

7. Think we need to know more about the actual conditions in Egypt and Syria ....
On the MSNBC/Ed Show coverage of tonight's new violence by Mubarak thugs

-- they began to relate that if you want to go to the Post Office, you have to

bribe someone -- on and on no matter what you want to do -- bribes.

I certainly know too little about these countries and what's been happening to

the people there.

9. Yes, they came into power not long after...
the Bathist overthrow in Iraq that eventually brought Saddam into power. The "so-called" Syrian President Bashar al- Assad just said two days ago that Syria "was immune to protest"! I would imagine the Bathist in Syria will come down just as hard as the Iranians did if not harder...Use live ammo & lock up reporters, known opposition groups, etc. My guess is they are already rounding folks up in secret like many regimes do at just the hint of trouble.

Who knows...but it will be interesting to see what happens.
