Journalists in Egypt arrested and attacked
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 12:25 PM by brooklynite
Source: Washington Post

A day after journalists were beaten by pro-government supporters in Cairo, the Egyptian Interior Ministry has arrested at least two dozen reporters, including two Washington Post staff members, according to multiple witnesses.

Leila Fadel, the Post's Cairo bureau chief, and Linda Davidson, a staff photographer, are among those who have been detained, said Douglas Jehl, the Post's foreign editor. Also, a translator working with them was also believed to have been taken into custody.

Three Al Jazeera journalists also have been detained and another is reported missing, according to a statement from the news network. Meantime, the Associated Press reported that its correspondent saw "eight foreign journalists detained by the military near the prime minister's office, not far from Tahrir Square."

"All three of our staff should be immediately released," Al Jazeera said. "We are concerned for their safety and welfare. We are taking every measure as a priority to obtain their release."

3. I imagine the police apparatus are most afraid of change because of their past actions.
Police brutality and torture are just a couple of the primary motivations; behind these protests and that will not diminish with more brutality, it will only intensify.

If Egypt; were smart it would take lessons from South Africa, not Iran.

Thanks for the thread, brooklynite.

6. Much of Al Jazeera's equipt has been taken, and a number of journalists arrested/abducted
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 01:00 PM by snot
At one point, pro-Mubarek supporters had surrounded the Hilton hotel where many of the journalists were based and were attempting to break in.

Edited to add, from Catherina, at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x339159 : "I'm very concerned about the organized crackdown on journalists. I'm really pissed off that we knew it was coming and ordered ours on an airlift before the crack of dawn.
Massive crimes empires doesn't want on record about to start now. The journalists, on the ground, out there have been real heroes."

This detention comes only a day after Logan herself reported on the intensified efforts of the Mubarak regime to clamp down on foreign journalists covering the ongoing protests.

police outside the Israli Embassy.

16. This muddying of responsibility by the media just helps the situation continue
imo. It's not a grammar thing but a gripe about an enabling frame.
