U.S. deserves ‘total control’ of northern border: lawmaker
Source: The Canadian Press

WASHINGTON—Every inch of the Canada-U.S. border and the American boundary with Mexico should be under “operational control” of American border officials, a U.S. lawmaker told a congressional hearing into border security on Tuesday.

“The acceptable level for the American citizen is total control of our southern border, our northern border, our natural ports of entry,” said Republican Jeff Duncan, a South Carolina lawmaker and a member of the House of Representatives Subcommittee on border and maritime security.

Such control would allow Americans to protect “this beacon of freedom,” Duncan said, “where we determine who comes into this country, how many folks come here through legal means annually, what they come for, whether they’re seeking citizenship.”

Duncan was one of several lawmakers who peppered Michael Fisher, the border patrol chief of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, on the true meaning of “operational control” following a recent congressional report that found only a small fraction of the Canada-U.S. border was being adequately monitored by American officials.

2. sounds less and less like a beacon of freedom
and more and more like a police state.

The lawmaker should be reminded that there is an ally on the northern border, an ally that isn't as stupidly paranoid as the right and left have made the US, with more progressive values. Perhaps we should build a wall to keep the Americans contained?

What an assinine man.

5. There's a jobs program for you ...
The Great Wall Of The United Corporations of America.

Imagine the (slave) labor required and who will know if it is to keep people/stuff in or out? Put a panopticon in the center and build private prisons with factories inside them, everywhere. Ooops, we are already.

6. Ummmm. Wow.
I guess a republican doesn't know that the US has operational control of the border - the US side of it. If america isn't happy with the job america is doing then perhaps america needs to either play nicer or step up their control.

Of course Canada has operational control of alot of the natural gas, electricity, oil, etc that flows into the US, so perhaps we should just play nice lest it get very cold one winter day when our furnaces just shut off.

But seriously, has this asshat even been to a border? It's pretty typical. Guards on one side, guards on the other.

10. Do these people have memory problems? Don't they remember the Cold War AT ALL?
The folks behind the Iron Curtain wanted to keep other nations out, and their people in. Other nations wanted into those countries, and their people wanted out. After decades of trying, only one solution was found for the problem. Fencing, lights, alarms, and even land mines were insufficient to keep determined people from crossing the border. Only one thing actually worked:

You'll note the sniper towers.

This is what it took to keep East Germans from crossing the border. With the full economic backing of one of the worlds two superpowers, it took all THAT to keep the border "safe and under control". It also required 50,000 guards and hundreds of towers to protect its 850+ mile length. America's borders, in contrast, are about 7,500 miles long. To match what they did would require a force of 450,000 border guards.
