Students stage walkout at Chippewa Falls Senior High School (Wisconsin)
Source: Chippewa Herald

A few hundred Chippewa Falls Senior High School students walked out of school at the beginning of the school day Thursday in protest of Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill that would virtually end teacher collective bargaining rights.

The protest began right after the start of the opening period at 8:35 a.m. A student’s voice came over the intercom and asked students opposed to Walker’s plans to go to the Cardinal (east end) doors.

As the students gathered just outside the door, senior Ryan Kahl, wearing a pressed blue dress shirt and a necktie, addressed them.

“This is a peaceful demonstration,” he said. “This is in support of our teachers, guys. Be smart and be courteous.”

2. Reminds me of the student protests last year in France
against a government plan to raise the retirement age.

4. What a wonderful lesson for young people!
This is how young people will learn to take back their democracy and their unions. They certainly aren't learning anything about those things in school. Whatever happens in the street, there are life lessons being learned that actually could make a real difference.
Bravo! This is the best news in a long long time. Solidarity Forever!

5. The history of the Labor Movement is not really taught at home.
My husband and I have both been active in the Labor community locally, and we have always included our daughter in what we do. She has been with us on informational pickets and has marched and chanted along with us whenever we thought it safe. (She's 13 and I'd still be reluctant to take her with me on a strike line for obvious reasons...) Anyhow, my kid has pretty much grown up in a union. We joke that "bulk mail is a game the whole family can play..." but it has been a part of her world experience that collective action is what adults do.

This last year we went to parent teacher meetings at her Jr High and we met with all her different teachers. She's a good student, so it was a pleasant experience with lots of good feedback. When we got to the social studies teacher, we walked in and introduced ourselves as (Material Girl)'s parents. The teacher absolutely lights up! She starts telling us about how wonderful it is to have Material Girl in her class, and how MUCH our kid contributes to the discussion. She goes on to tell us about the unit they had just finished where they discussed labor unions, and how our kid had been an absolute fountain of information about local labor unions. Anyhow, she then went on to explain that most kids who she gets in her class have zero idea what a union is about and no clue what it is to organize. She reported that in all her sections of social studies our kid was the ONLY one that had ever marched for anything.

Most families are not union anymore, and kids have no information about unions beyond what they see on tv or hear at home. We are exceptions here at DU. Most families are not teaching kids what it is to organize or how to stand up for what they believe is right.

6. Thank you for that wonderful comment.
You and your husband can be proud that you are raising a real citizen who will make a real difference in this society. Congradulations!
