San Francisco Chronicle(02-18) 14:21 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds' trial judge wants lawyers to strike a plea bargain that would settle the perjury case against baseball's home run champion without a trial.
At a brief hearing Friday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Judge Susan Illston asked Bonds' legal team and government prosecutors to seek "a resolution of this short of trial."
"In every case, it's always worth taking a fresh look at the possibilities," she said.
Lead prosecutor Matthew Parrella said the government would have that conversation with Bonds' team, although he didn't sound optimistic that a plea bargain could be struck.
