The vote was very close, after a four-hour meeting of 1500 members of MTI.

There were two votes, actually. The first vote was too close to call, so they sent everyone out of the meeting hall and had them reenter one by one through separate doors, according to their vote.

1. If the same had been done in Florida in 2000 think of all the
misery we'd have missed.

3. I respect what the teachers there ultimately decided what to do.
It was their decision to make and not ours.

9. That's crazy...
Is it typical for schools there to be open on Presidents' Day?

14. No. Maybe it's a regional thing?
I received public education, K-12-BS, in Madison. We never had President's Day off. Never considered it. Pretty sure state government is open. Folks here pretty much put in the same category with Columbus Day, etc.

Milwaukee schools are closed Monday. I heard about it this past week and this is the first I've heard about it. I've been in Milwaukee 20 years now.

18. Many schools in MO used MLK Day as a snow makeup day
Some schools in the DC area also used it as makeup day after the DC Sniper shootings

8. Another link - related to President's Day Holiday
It appears that there is some variation on which teachers have that day off. Some are ssked to report to work, others no? I dunno, but here is another link...

10. So all Walker has to do is wait until Tuesday,
and then resume his demolition of the union. It looked good while it lasted.

12. Let the teabaggers do it
They should let the teabaggers who are being bused into Wisconsin by the Koch Sucker Brothers to do the teaching. I've heard that most teabaggers can get at least 25% of the questions right on "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?"

demonstration means you're ready to back down.

21. I would have prefered they didn't take an official vote
It certainly gives the appearance of a strike vs protest.

20. MAdison teachers weren't the only ones there. Others can keep going,
with teachers arriving at the end of the school day. I'm not giving up hope.
