Philippines' Mount Bulusan eruption causes major explosion of ash
Source: Digital Journal

Luzon - It has been reported that there has been a major volcanic eruption at Mount Bulusan, which is on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. The built up steam led to a major eruption of ash that has reached two kilometres high.

On Sunday, ABS-CBN News reported of another intense eruption that spewed a two-kilometre ash cloud. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the cloud is heading in a southwest direction towards a town called Irosin.
“We expected this. We are on Alert Level 1,” said director of PHIVOLCS, Renato Solidum. “At this stage, it is possible to have steam-triggered explosions which are not really very strong. People are still advised not to enter the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone.”

24 hours prior to the eruption, PHIVOLCS recorded two earthquakes near Mount Bulusan – it wasn’t reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

1. Update: Philippine volcano erupts twice in 24 hours
http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/02/20/philippine.volcano.erupts/

Philippine seismologists issued an alert on Mount Bulusan Sunday after the Luzon Island volcano erupted twice during a 24-hour period, according to a bulletin released by the nation's volcano-monitoring agency.

However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) said the eruptions posed little threat to the villages surrounding the Luzon Island volcano. Most of the villages lie outside the 4-kilometer (2 1/2-mile) danger zone, the bulletin stated.

3. Woops! There goes another one
If you live near a volcano, alive or dead,
now is the time to think about relocating.

7. Nah. I live in Portland, one of only two cities with a volcano within city limits
But it's been extinct since the Plio-Pleistocene, I'm not worried. St. Helens is the closest active volcano, and it's far enough away that we only have to worry about ash-fall.

I'll save my worrying for the Cascadia Fault. :scared:

9. There's another one in Jackson Mississippi
and one in Bend, Oregon, and of course HI.. and AK.

The Historical marker on Mt. Tabor says it is the only Volcano within city limits in the lower 48 states, but that marker was put up before the other volcanoes were counted (the city limits have changed).

I knew about the one in Jackson, but I didn't know about Oakland or Bend. :)
