BEIJING (AFP) – A senior Libyan diplomat posted in China has resigned and called on the army to intervene in the bloody uprising against leader Moamer Kadhafi, the Al-Jazeera news network reported Monday.

The diplomat, Hussein Sadiq al Musrati, stepped down in an on-air interview with Al-Jazeera and "called on all diplomatic staff to resign", the Qatar-based satellite television channel reported on its website.

The official also said Kadhafi "may have left Libya" and that there had been a "gunfight" between his sons, the network added, while noting it was unable to confirm those statements.

Musrati is listed as the second secretary in the Libyan mission to Beijing. Embassy staff told AFP on Monday that officials were not available for comment on the report.

The BBC, on its Arabic service website, said Ambassador Ali al-Essawi also accused the government of deploying foreign mercenaries against the protesters. The BBC confirmed to Reuters it had spoken to Essawi.

2. Also, Libya's Arab League representative Abdel-Monem al-Houni has resigned

02/20/2011 3:52 PM Libyan Ambassador To Arab League Resigns

The AP reports: The Arab League said it was following with great concern the demonstrations in Arab countries and called for "the immediate halt of all acts of violence and to refrain from using force against the peaceful demonstrations."

In Cairo, Libya's Arab League representative Abdel-Monem al-Houni said he told the Foreign Ministry in Tripoli that he had "resigned from all his duties and joined the popular revolution."

"As a Libyan citizen, I absolutely cannot be quiet about these crimes," he said, adding that he had renounced all links to the regime because of "my complete devotion to my people."

Al-Houni was part of the group that carried out the coup in 1969 that brought Gadhafi to power. He later fell out with the Libyan leader, but they reconciled in 2000. Gadhafi then named him to the Arab League post.
